To create miniaturized components, a 3-axis micro-milling machine tool composed of linear motor stages, high-speed air-bearing spindle and motion control card DMC-1842 is developed in this paper. The CNC system of the parallel double CPU based on industrial control computer and Windows operating system is constructed. The application software of CNC system is exploited by modularized mind in C# programming language, reasonable human-computer interface is designed. Finally, in order to validate the performance of the micro-milling machine, the miniaturized parts are machined o by developed CNC system. Through these tests analysis, the hardware and software architecture of the CNC system is verified to meet the requirements of the micro-milling machine tool. Micro-milling process with developed micro-milling machine tool is proved to be feasible and applicable, and can fully satisfy the producing requires of miniaturized components.

The traditional CNC system is established on conventional machine tool mainly using ball screws. This could not suitable for micro mechanical machining with linear motor which could provide high speed, high precision, fast response and zero backlash. In this paper, a 3-axis micro milling machine tool with an open CNC system has been developed based on motion controller and linear motors. Considering the requirements of micro milling several special functions just like micro cutting tool setting are provided in exploited control software. The system dynamic characteristics are evaluated through experiments with servo parameters adjustments. In the following machining experiments, the whole system is proved economically and effectively.

The paper presents the method of a microscopic study of ceramic chips which can be useful in the analysis of physical phenomena regarding machining of ceramic materials. The analyzed chips were obtained on the milling machine tool from the Al2O3 based ceramic material. The measurements were performed using focus-variation technique (FVT). The InfiniteFocus Real3D microscope from Alicona Imaging company was applied. The paper mainly focuses on the methodology of measurements and the application of microscope’s software tools which can be used in the analysis of chips' 3D scans. The conditions of measurement process are discussed on the basis of the results of exemplary measurements of ceramic chips.

The article presents safety issues related to on-site machining with the use of portable machine tools. Their advantage is the possibility of machining elements at places in which they are used. This especially refers to large-size constructions, welded elements and any items whose disassembly is technically difficult. The authors present tasks performed by the operators of portable machining equipment, working conditions, construction and characteristic features of portable machine tools on the example of a portable boring machine, milling machine and flange facing machine. The presented characteristics can influence the safety of work with these machines. The information given in the article were used to asses risk at the position of a portable machine tool operator. The assessment was conducted using the Risk Score method taking into account four stages of using portable machine tools, i.e. transport, assembly/disassembly, machining and maintenance. The result of the conducted risk analysis is the proposal of possible risk reducing actions. Due to the specificity of the operation of portable machine tools which significantly impedes the development of a machine tool which would be safe in and of itself, the proposed actions refer mainly to organisational solutions. The work presents also the thesis that it is possible to decrease the risk at this position thanks to the use of numerical control in a portable machine tool. Such a solution may reduce exposure to some identified threats. The issue is presented on the example of a prototype of a portable flange facing machine developed in the Institute of Mechanical Technology ZUT in Szczecin.

Dynamic characteristic of ball screw feed system in a milling machine is studied numerically in this work. In order to avoid the difficulty in determining the stiffness of rolling joints theoretically, a dynamic modeling method for analyzing the feed system is discussed, and a stiffness calculation method of the rolling joints is proposed based on the Hertz contact theory. Taking a 3-axis computer numerical control (CNC) milling machine set ermined as a research object, the stiffness of its fixed joint between the column and the body together with the stiffness parameters of the rolling joints is evaluated according to the Takashi Yoshimura method. Then, a finite element (FE) model is established for the machine tool. The correctness of the FE model and the stiffness calculation method of the rolling joints are validated by theoretical and experimental modal analysis results of the machine tool’s workbench. Under the two modeling methods of joints incorporating the stiffness parameters and rigid connection, a theoretical modal analysis is conducted for the CNC milling machine. The natural frequencies and modal shapes reveal that the joints’ dynamic characteristic has an important influence on the dynamic performance of a whole machine tool, especially for the case with natural frequency and higher modes.

In order to improve the dynamic stability of precision micro slitting turn-milling machine tools, reduce or avoid the vibration problem during the cutting process, optimize the machine structure and processing parameters, the modal analysis of precision micro slitting turn-milling machine tool based on hammer experimental method was researched. In this paper, by analyzing the mechanism of precision micro slitting turn-milling machine tools, the multi degree-of-freedom mathematical vibration model of precision slitting turn-milling machine tools is constructed. The precision micro turn-milling machine tool is analyzed based on the hammer experiment analysis. The modal analysis obtained the first five natural frequencies and resonance speeds of the precision micro slitting turn-milling machine tool, including ST26, NN-25UB8K2 and NN-20UB87. The research results show that hammer experimental method can evaluate the vibration modal analysis of precision micro slitting turn-milling machine tools to some extent. The experimental modal analysis results guide and optimize the structural design and processing technology of precision micro slitting turn-milling machine tools.
