Head and neck cancer represents 3% of malignancies, and it is associated with high mortality due to advanced stage diagnosis. In early stages, the symptomatology can either be absent or be very common, misleading the patient who often ignores it. Early diagnosis of head and neck neoplasia is essential for a favorable long-term outcome. Lately new in vivo examination techniques were developed, and older ones have been improved. Today, in vivo staining techniques are an important tool in the diagnostic of head and neck cancer. Lugol iodine staining method provides valuable information concerning the tumor, allowing the surgeon to differentiate premalignant and malignant lesions.

AbstractThis article represents part 3 of the EFSUMB Recommendations and Guidelines for Gastrointestinal Ultrasound (GIUS). It provides an overview of the examination techniques recommended by experts in the field of endorectal/endoanal ultrasound (ERUS/EAUS), as well as perineal ultrasound (PNUS). The most important indications are rectal tumors and inflammatory diseases like fistula and abscesses in patients with or without inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). PNUS sometimes is more flexible and convenient compared to ERUS. However, the technique of ERUS is quite well established, especially for the staging of rectal cancer. EAUS also gained ground in the evaluation of perianal diseases like fistulas, abscesses and incontinence. For the staging of perirectal tumors, the use of PNUS in addition to conventional ERUS could be recommended. For the staging of anal carcinomas, PNUS can be a good option because of the higher resolution. Both ERUS and PNUS are considered excellent guidance methods for invasive interventions, such as the drainage of fluids or targeted biopsy of tissue lesions. For abscess detection and evaluation, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) also helps in therapy planning.

AbstractThe cuticle exoskeleton plays a key role in facilitating the evolutionary success of insects. Since the mid of the last century, many different biomechanical properties of exoskeletons have been investigated, always utilizing the most sophisticated scientific methods available at the time. So far, information on the biomechanical properties of cuticle seems to be as diverse as the methods used to measure them. As a consequence, insect cuticle is often considered to exhibit the most complex and diverse biomechanical properties of any biological material. However, it remains unclear which role the respective measurement methods and sample treatments used in previous studies play in supporting this claim. This review provides a broad overview of examination techniques used to study biomechanical properties of insect exoskeletons and discusses their respective advantages and disadvantages in describing the properties of a complex material such as cuticle. Our meta-analysis of the present data confirms significant effects of the respective measurement methods, sample treatments and body parts on the obtained mechanical properties. Based on our findings, we highlight research gaps and point out important factors which should be taken into account in future studies on insect cuticle.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the ability of the sports medicine physician to be present to participate in in-person sideline evaluation of the injured athlete. The purpose of this review is to assess existing literature regarding the utilization of telehealth for sideline evaluation and management of the injured athlete, as well as to identify further areas of research. With the rapid incorporation of telehealth visits, the utilization and capabilities of telemedicine continue to expand. A number of evidence-based resources are available to support medical providers to develop and utilize video evaluation for the sideline evaluation of sports-related injuries. Future research, including the development of validated, modified examination techniques and technologies, will allow for improved interactive physical examinations, which may be better utilized for sideline evaluation.
