SUS316L austenitic stainless steel was subjected to severe plastic deformation (SPD) by the method of high pressure torsion (HPT). From a fully austenitic matrix (γ), HPT resulted in phase transformation from g®a¢. The largest volume fraction of 70% a¢ was obtained at 0.2 revolutions per minute (rpm) while was limited to 3% at 5rpm. Pre-straining of g by HPT at 5rpm decreases the volume fraction of a¢ obtained by HPT at 0.2rpm. By HPT at 5rpm, a¢®g reverse transformation was observed for a¢ produced by HPT at 0.2rpm.

Mg-Tb-Nd ternary alloy represents a novel hardenable Mg-based alloy with enhanced strength and favorable creep properties. In the present work we studied microstructure of ultra fine grained (UFG) Mg-Tb-Nd alloy prepared by high pressure torsion (HPT). Lattice defects introduced into the specimen by the severe plastic deformation play a key role in physical properties of UFG specimens. It is known that positron lifetime (PL) spectroscopy is highly sensitive to open volume defects (like vacancies, dislocations, etc.). Therefore, PL spectroscopy is an ideal tool for defect characterizations in the HPT deformed specimens. In the present work we combined PL studies with transmission electron microscopy and microhardness measurements. After detailed characterization of the as-deformed structure, the specimens were step-by-step isochronally annealed and we investigated the development of microstructure with increasing temperature.

Plastic deformation leads to a structural refinement by introducing low angle dislocation boundaries and high angle boundaries in the initial coarse grains. To understand the mechanisms for the structural refinement and to establish the structure-strength relationship requires a precise characterization of key structural parameters, namely the boundary spacing and boundary misorientation angle. This study gives the results of such a characterization of pure Ni subjected to high pressure torsion (HPT) up to a strain of 300. The structural analysis was carried out by transmission electron microscopy in the longitudinal sample section in which the detailed structural features can be resolved. It is found that the microstructure in the HPT Ni samples is dominated by a lamellar structure. The spacing of the lamellar boundaries decreases and their misorientation angle increases with strain following a power law up to strain of 12, above which saturation is reached at a strain of about 34. The distribution of lamellar spacings normalized by their respective average values at each strain show an identical form. This scaling behavior is discussed also with reference to other metals and processing routes.
