The small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) which are the backbone of any economy are often on the disadvantaged side of the digital divide in the construction industry. With the advent of building information modelling (BIM), the SMEs are facing challenges and are slow with its uptake. Hitherto, extant research studies on BIM have focused primarily on the large firms and there is an observed trend of underrepresentation of the SMEs in BIM studies. Thus, this paper aims to investigate the major drivers of sustainable adoption of Building Information Modelling in SMEs and the dynamics of these drivers in developing countries using interpretive structural modelling approach and Matrice d’Impacts croises-multipication applique a classement (MICMAC) analysis. The findings reveal that organizational readiness is of utmost importance for the proliferation of BIM in SMEs. Also, the independent drivers which are the most important drivers consist of BIM characteristics, internal and external environment drivers and thus portray the BIM adoption as a complex socio-technical system. This study categorizes the drivers for easy intervention of SMEs’ managers and policymakers. It contributes to the nascent studies of BIM adoption in SMEs of developing countries.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the integration of a quantity surveyor (QS) role and practice within the building information modelling (BIM) process to enable better implementation of five-dimensional building information modelling (5D BIM) (D is a result of the data/information dimension integrated in a BIM model). It proposes the use of a “level of development and level of detail” to provide a structured approach for QSs’ integration within the BIM process for an improved implementation of 5D BIM. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses semi-structured interviews with QSs from academic and industry in the UK. A total of 20 face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with two groups (industrial and academic) of ten participants from the West Midlands region in the UK. The interview questions have focussed on gaining perspectives on BIM, BIM and government protocols for the QS profession, expectations and challenges when implementing 5D BIM. Findings The findings show that BIM is perceived differently, and limitation of information obtained from the 3D models in BIM reduce the reliability of 5D BIM for QSs and implementing of 5D BIM needs an understanding of BIM workflow and information requirements. Research limitations/implications Although the findings reveal many of the complexities that face QSs within the BIM process and the shortfalls of 5D BIM technology, the results may lack generalisation. Thus, future research seeks to test the proposed framework further. Practical implications This paper elicits implications of shortfalls that impact the implementation of 5D BIM technology and the complexities that face QSs within the BIM process. Originality/value This paper reveals the need to understand the process of integrating stakeholders and their information requirements for better implementation of technologies within BIM.

Purpose This study aims to evaluate and investigate the dynamics of the barriers to building information modelling (BIM) adoption from the perspective of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries with the Nigerian construction industry as a case study. Design/methodology/approach An interpretive structural modelling approach was adopted to develop a hierarchical model of the interrelationships of the barriers. Also, the Matrice d’Impacts croises-multipication applique a classement analysis was used for categorisation of the barriers. Findings The findings revealed that the barriers are from a sociotechnical context and that SMEs have the will to drive BIM adoption by focussing more on their internal environment. Originality/value This study presented the adoption of BIM in SMEs, which is underrepresented in extant studies. Also, it contributes to the nascent discussion of BIM from the perspective of SMEs in developing countries.

Building information modelling (BIM) is one of the new technologies being used in architectural and constructions projects. At present, BIM curricula are being taught in many Malaysian higher learning institutions, including at the certificate level in community colleges. Even though many studies have investigated behavioural intention to adopt BIM in the industrial setting, studies on the intention to use BIM among students during their training or learning have not received the same level of attention. This study, therefore, investigated the extent to which community college students are willing to accept and use BIM. Factors that influenced their behavioural intention to use BIM, as well as the relationship between the factors and intention to use were also examined. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used as the theoretical framework to guide the research, where students’ behavioural intention to use BIM was explained through their perceptions of its usefulness and ease of use, as well as their attitude towards BIM utilization in the classroom. A total of 144 community college students enrolled in the architecture programmes in Malaysia were selected as the sample using convenience sampling. The findings show that the students’ behavioural intention to adopt BIM is high. They also perceive BIM as useful and easy to use, and their attitude towards BIM usage appears to be positive. The regression model produced an adjusted R-squared value of 0.790 indicating that 79% of the total variance in the students’ intention to use BIM can be explained by the three independent variables, i.e., perceived usefulness, ease of use, and attitude.
