Background: Different interpositional materials have been used to prevent recurrence after gap arthroplasty in temporomandibular joint ankylosis. In this study, the temporalis superficial fascia flap was evaluated as an interpositional material after condylectomy. Materials and Methods: 9 Cases of unilateral or bilateral temporomandibular joint ankylosis were evaluated in this study with a follow-up of 12 months. The Al-khayat approach was used as the surgical technique with the inferiorly based temporalis superficial fascia flap. Results: 9 Patients (6 female and 3 male) had a preoperative maximal inter-incisal opening of 3 to 10 mm. During the last follow-up observation after surgery, patients had a maximum inter-incisal opening of 40 to 45 mm. Paresthesia or anesthesia of the temporal branch of facial nerve was absent in all cases. There were no signs of re-ankylosing in any of the patients. Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that the temporalis superficial fascia flap is a good alternative as an interpositional material in treatment of temporomandibular joint ankylosis.

SummaryObjectives: Intra-condylar humeral fracture with supracondylar comminution in cats is rare, and the stabilisation for such fractures is challenging. The purpose of our study was to describe the use of a hybrid external skeletal fixator, and to report the complications and outcomes of this surgical technique. Methods: A retrospective review was performed of clinical, radiographic and surgical records of all cats with intra-condylar humeral fractures and non-reconstructable supracondylar comminution stabilized by linear-circular external skeletal fixator in two institutions between January 2005 and March 2010.Results: Four cats met the inclusion criteria of the study. All cases achieved fracture union and clinical outcome was considered excellent at the time of the final assessment (11 – 24 weeks).Clinical significance: This study demonstrates that a linear-circular fixator system can be used successfully in the management of intra-con dylar humeral fractures with non-reconstructable supracondylar comminution in cats.

Background: Astigmatism is an error of refraction that can affect visual outcome after cataract surgery. The degree of astigmatism is usually estimated pre-operatively by keratometry readings. These readings can help in the plan of surgical technique and choice of intraocular lenses during cataract surgery in order to improve visual outcome. This study was done to provide data on the pattern of preoperative astigmatism in cataract patients in South East Nigeria. It is hoped that this knowledge will increase the awareness on pre-operative astigmatism among ophthalmologist so that they can improve their surgical skills on ways of reducing this astigmatism or avoid worsening it. Methods: A retrospective review of keratometry readings of 533 patients were taken from June 2018 to December 2019, with emphasis on the cylinders. Results: The most common degree of astigmatism was -0.75DC. The proportion of patients with preoperative astigmatism ≤ -1.00DC was 60% while 40% had values higher than -1.00DC. Conclusion: There may usually be significant pre-operative astigmatism in patients scheduled for cataract surgery. This calls for an improvement in surgical skills in minimizing astigmatism and avoiding worsening preoperative astigmatism. There should be increase availability and use of toric lenses for correction of preoperative astigmatism. Finally accurate postoperative refraction will have a positive impact in the management of astigmatism, whether preoperative or surgically induced.

Background and aims. This study describes the technique of simultaneous middle and inferior antrostomy and outlines its usefulness in the management of maxillary mucoceles.Methods. This is a retrospective review of 12 consecutive patients with isolated maxillary mucocele operated on by means of middle and inferior antrostomy technique. We describe the clinical picture, details of the surgical technique and outcomes.Results. There were 7 males and 5 females with ages ranging from 20 years to 65 years (mean 42 years). One patient had past trauma to the face and one had a long history of chronic sinusitis. Eight patients had undergone multiple previous sinus operative procedures including Caldwell-Luc approach. All patients underwent middle and inferior antrostomy without complications. Follow-up was between 12 months and 60 months (mean 36 months) with no recurrences to date.Conclusion. In conclusion the results of our small series support the worth of using middle and inferior antrostomy when dealing with maxillary mucoceles.

The authors present a retrospective study evaluating the results of calcaneonavicular bar resection with interposition of the extensor digitorum brevis in ten patients with painful calcaneonavicular coalition. All operative procedures were supervised by one of the authors to ensure consistency in preoperative evaluation, surgical technique, and postoperative care. Results obtained from questionnaires showed significant improvement of preoperative symptoms with increased activity levels noted in all patients.

A retrospective review of 20 patients who had undergone a peroneal regrooving surgical technique for chronic subluxing peroneal tendons was conducted. The design of the study was based subjectively on a questionnaire completed by the patients and objectively on a physical examination of all the patients included in the study. The authors present the technique and emphasize the importance of preoperative assessment in predicting the results that should reasonably be expected by the patient, especially in the presence of any peroneal tendon pathology.
