The thermodynamic equilibrium of structures consisting of a thin film silicide (TiSi2 or CoSi2) on doped Si (with As or B) is investigated. Isothermal sections of the ternary phase diagrams for Ti–Si–B, Co–Si–B, Ti–Si–As, and Co–Si–As have been evaluated, indicating the stability of high B concentrations in Si underneath a CoSi2 layer, the instability of high As concentrations in Si underneath a CoSi2 layer, and of B and As concentrations underneath a TiSi2 layer. The obtained thermodynamic predictions agree very well with experimental results (i) on the redistribution of dopants during silicide formation, (ii) on the diffusion of dopants from an ion implanted silicide, and (iii) on the stability of highly doped regions underneath the silicide, both for the case of TiSi2 and CoSi2. It is shown that even though the inaccuracy of reported thermodynamic data is substantial, thermodynamic calculations provide a useful guidance and are consistent with the experimental results.

Students consider spatial visualization as one of the major difficulties at which they had to face in engineering studies. Most of them think that any effort leading to improve the understanding of such problem is welcomed. Taking this into account, an interactive application is developed in this paper in order to overcome the difficulties that engineering students traditionally find with regard to the visualization of ternary phase diagrams. To develop the didactic application diverse commercial software were used: (i) 3DStudioMax for designing the ternary equilibrium diagram and (ii) Quest3D for giving the tool a more intuitive and easy to use character. The result is a 3D virtual application which students can use for interacting in real time with a ternary diagram, e.g. changing point of view, rotating view, observing hidden zones of the diagram by applying transparency option, exploding view phases, cutting the diagram revealing isothermal sections and so on.

Isothermal sections at 670, 740, and 800 °C in the Cr–Ga–N ternary system were investigated. Details of the Cr–Ga and Cr–N binary phase diagrams were confirmed, and the equilibrium diagrams were constructed. At all temperatures, Cr3GaN was in equilibrium with all the condensed phases, except GaN. In the 670–800 °C temperature range, Cr2GaN appears to be kinetically stable in contact with GaN. This led to the construction of behavior diagrams that are valid only as long as GaN is present in the initial mixture. Above ∼910 °C, Cr2GaN decomposes to form Cr3GaN, CrN, and Ga(1). At 1000 °C, Cr3GaN is in equilibrium with all the condensed phases, and CrN is in equilibrium with Ga.

Spatial (three-dimensional - 3D) computer model of the T-x-y diagram of the Ag - Cu - Ni system, which is promising for the development of environmentally friendly solders, is presented. The model is constructed on the basis of published data on the binary systems forming this ternary system, the concentration projection of the liquidus surfaces, and four isothermal sections. It is shown that the phase diagram (PD) consists of 14 surfaces and 9 phase regions. The adequacy of the model is confirmed by comparing the isothermal sections and the liquidus projection.
