CF/SiC and Hi-Nicalon/SiC composites were prepared by precursor pyrolysis-hot pressing, and the microstructure and fracture behavior of the composites were investigated. Because of a strongly bonded fiber/matrix interface primarily resulting from the direct reactions between the fibers and matrix, Hi-Nicalon/SiC composite exhibited a typical brittle fracture behavior. However, CF/SiC composite displayed a tough fracture behavior with extensive fiber pullout, which was primarily attributed to a weakly bonded fiber/matrix interface as well as higher strength retention of the fibers. As a result, CF/SiC composite achieved better mechanical properties of 691.6 MPa in strength and 20.7 MPa•m1/2 in toughness, which were much higher than those of Hi-Nicalon/SiC composite.

To estimate the ion-irradiation effect on various types of SiCf/SiC composites, a silicon self-ion irradiation was performed at temperatures of 600 °C and 1200 °C and at doses of 5 dpa and 20 dpa, respectively. These SiCf/SiC composites were prepared by different processes such as CVI (chemical vapor infiltration), WA-CVI (SiC whisker assisted CVI) and hot-pressing (HP) method. Hardness was measured by a nano-indentation tester and microstructural changes were observed by TEM with SAD(selected area diffraction) technique for the specimens prepared by FIB (Focused Ion Beam) milling. The damage dose was calculated by the SRIM2003 code and then compared with microstructureal observation.

Butyl rubber — Ca 4 La 6( SiO 4)4( PO 4)2 O 2 — composites have been prepared by sigma mixing and hot pressing. The relative permittivity of the composites varies from 3 to 5.3 at 1 MHz. All the composites show low dielectric loss of the order of 10−3 at 1 MHz. The experimentally observed values of relative permittivity are correlated with those calculated using various theoretical models. The composites show good temperature stability of relative permittivity.
