Service-learning is a pedagogical process that actively involves students in social analysis, social criticism and social participation. This effort is not community service - which all too often conveys the impression of rather forcefully providing cheap, low skill, manual labour for less-than-affluent communities (Institute for Justice, 1994). This effort is not charity - which all too often appears to perpetuate stereotypes, to provide the elite with a false sense of altruism, and to inflict upon the disenfranchised a reinforced sense of despair (Freire, 1964). Rather, service-learning encourages students to speak in their own voice, to research authentic social needs, to be advocates for their social interests, and to serve their communities in the pursuit of social justice. This article examines one methodology that links service-learning to social education.

Community participation in an effective development framework can be developed by empowering the potential and assets of the local community. Community service in Jati Sawahan Lengkong Nganjuk succeeded in involving the role of micro businesses to carry out knowledge sharing techniques for making dyed batik for mothers of members of the yasinan group. The success of the service program is supported by mapping the potential and adequacy of social analysis so that it can map partner and target assets at the planning stage with sufficient data support. The success of the activity is supported by simultaneous coordination between stakeholders and the support of assets and potential of religious and community leaders and openness in accepting evaluations.

Abstrack: Mentoring at the Community Service orphanage in Surabaya. Activities  carried out for 3 (three) months to solve the problem  at hand. The method used to solve problems with social analysis and in depth interviews  to orphanages, management and graduate. Bad past experience, poor family environment, unclear background and different treatments when in the community make  them less confident. That self-confidence is very influential for success in the future.  Therefore, through this KKN program, we want to build self-confidence by using the school wall magazine media. So  that the school environment will respond positively to them.
