Abstract To mitigate global warming, it is necessary to emit less CO2 into the atmosphere and the Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS) attracts attention these days as one of the solutions against the problem. Off Tomakomai coast, Japan, a CCS project has been demonstrated since 2016. However, there may be a risk of CO2 leakage and consequent seepage from the seafloor, even if the probability of such an event is almost nil. In this research, we assumed that CO2 seeps from multiple points on the seafloor and aimed at estimating the seepage locations, time and fluxes, by using CO2 concentration data observed by several sensors set on the seafloor. We adopted the adjoint marginal sensitivity method, which is a probabilistic time-backward method: an adjoint location probability is released by each sensor and spreads in the time-backward direction. The adjoint location probabilities are used to estimate the seepage fluxes. We also combined the least squares method with the adjoint marginal sensitivity method to estimate the seepage fluxes. We considered that CO2 seeps from 2 points in 2-dimensional horizontal domains as test calculations with changing seepage flux ratios, such as 1:1, 1:0.1 or 1:0.01.

Over the last 30 years, numerical estimation has been largely studied. Recently, Castronovo and Seron (2007) proposed the bi-directional mapping hypothesis in order to account for the finding that dependent on the type of estimation task (perception vs. production of numerosities), reverse patterns of performance are found (i.e., under- and over-estimation, respectively). Here, we further investigated this hypothesis by submitting adult participants to three types of numerical estimation task: (1) a perception task, in which participants had to estimate the numerosity of a non-symbolic collection; (2) a production task, in which participants had to approximately produce the numerosity of a symbolic numerical input; and (3) a reproduction task, in which participants had to reproduce the numerosity of a non-symbolic numerical input. Our results gave further support to the finding that different patterns of performance are found according to the type of estimation task: (1) under-estimation in the perception task; (2) over-estimation in the production task; and (3) accurate estimation in the reproduction task. Moreover, correlation analyses revealed that the more a participant under-estimated in the perception task, the more he/she over-estimated in the production task. We discussed these empirical data by showing how they can be accounted by the bi-directional mapping hypothesis ( Castronovo & Seron, 2007 ).

3-D optimal design of laminated yoke of billet heater for rolling wire rod using ON/OFF method The optimization method using the ON/OFF sensitivity analysis has an advantage that an epoch-making construction of magnetic circuit may be obtained. Therefore, it is attractive for designers of magnetic devices. We have already developed the ON/OFF method for the optimization of a static magnetic field problem, and the effectiveness is verified by applying it to the optimization of magnetic recording heads. In this paper, the ON/OFF sensitivity method is extended to the optimization of the eddy current problem using the adjoint variable. The newly developed ON/OFF method is applied to the determination of the optimal topology of the yoke of the billet heater for rolling wire rod. As a result, the optimal shape of yoke, which we could not imagine beforehand can be obtained. It is shown that the local heating of the yoke was reduced without decreasing the heating efficiency.
