On the basis of the numerical manifold method, this work introduces the concept of stress intensity factor at the crack tip in fracture mechanics and proposes the utilisation of artificial joint technology to ensure the accuracy of joint geometric dimensions in the element generation of the numerical manifold method. The contour integral method is used to solve the stress intensity factor at the joint tip, and the failure criterion and direction of crack propagation at the joint tip are determined. Element reconstruction and crack tracking are implemented in crack propagation, and a simulation programme of the entire process of deformation, failure, propagation and coalescence of jointed rock masses is developed. The rationality of the proposed method is verified by performing the typical uniaxial compression test and direct shear test.

AbstractIn this paper, a framework for the simulation of crack propagation in brittle and ductile materials is proposed. The framework is derived by extending the eigenerosion approach of Pandolfi and Ortiz (Int J Numer Methods Eng 92(8):694–714, 2012. 10.1002/nme.4352) to finite strains and by connecting it with a generalized energy-based, Griffith-type failure criterion for ductile fracture. To model the elasto-plastic response, a classical finite strain formulation is extended by viscous regularization to account for the shear band localization prior to fracture. The compression–tension asymmetry, which becomes particularly important during crack propagation under cyclic loading, is incorporated by splitting the strain energy density into a tensile and compression part. In a comparative study based on benchmark problems, it is shown that the unified approach is indeed able to represent brittle and ductile fracture at finite strains and to ensure converging, mesh-independent solutions. Furthermore, the proposed approach is analyzed for cyclic loading, and it is shown that classical Wöhler curves can be represented.

Abstract Atomistic understanding of mechanics and failure of materials is the key for engineering and applications. Modeling accurately brittle failure with crack propagation in covalent crystals requires a quantum mechanics-based description of individual bond-breaking events for large system sizes. Machine Learned (ML) potentials have emerged to overcome the traditional, physics-based modeling tradeoff between accuracy and accessible time and length scales. Previous studies have shown successful applications of ML potentials for describing the structure and dynamics of molecular systems and amorphous or liquid phases of materials. However, their application to deformation and failure processes in materials is yet uncommon. In this study, we discuss apparent limitations of ML potentials to describe deformation and fracture under loadings and propose a way to generate and select training data for their employment in simulations of deformation and fracture of crystals. We applied the proposed approach to 2D crystal graphene, utilizing the density-functional tight-binding (DFTB) method for more efficient and extensive data generation in place of density functional theory (DFT). Then, we explore how the data selection affects the accuracy of the developed artificial neural network potential (NNP), indicating that only the errors in total energies and atomic forces are insufficient to judge the NNP’s reliability. Therefore, we evaluate and select NNPs based on their performance in describing physical properties, e.g., stress-strain curves and geometric deformation. In sharp contrast to popular reactive bond order potentials, our optimized NNP predicts straight crack propagation in graphene along both armchair and zigzag lattice directions, as well as higher fracture toughness of zigzag edge direction. Our study provides significant insight into crack propagation mechanisms at atomic scales and highlights strategies for NNP developments of broader materials.

The material mechanical properties and crack propagation behavior of dissimilar metal welded joint (DMWJ) of pressurized water reactor (PWR) was investigated. In this research, the mechanical parameters of the cladding layer materials (304L-SA508) of the DMWJ in PWRs were obtained by the continuous indentation test. Simultaneously, the user-defined (USDFLD) subroutine in ABAQUS was used to establish the heterogeneous materials model of the welded joint. On this basis, the local crack propagation path of DMWJs has been discussed based on the extended finite element method (XFEM). The result indicated that the strength value at the fusion boundary line (FB line) is the largest, and the yield strength reaches 689 MPa. The yield stress values of the cladding metal (304 L) and base metal (SA508) are 371 MPa and 501 MPa, respectively. Affected by the material constraint effect of the DMWJ, the crack will propagate through the FB line when the initial crack is perpendicular to the FB line. And when the initial crack parallels the FB line, the crack will deviate from it. Meanwhile, the crack propagation length is smaller as the initial crack tip is closer to the FB line when the load condition is constant.
