Bacterioplankton abundance and community structure during post-monsoon in mangrove dominated estuaries of the Indian Sundarbans; An insight to biogeochemical processes

Mine tailings host dynamic biogeochemical processes that can mobilize a range of elements from the host material and release them into the environment through acidic, neutral, or alkaline mine drainage. Here we use a combination of mineralogical, geochemical, and microbiological techniques that provide a better understanding of biogeochemical processes within the surficial layers of neutral cobalt and arsenic-rich tailings material at Cobalt, ON, Canada. Tailings material within 30-cm depth profiles from three tailings sites (sites A, B, and C) were characterized for their mineralogical, chemical and microbial community compositions. The tailings material at all sites contains (sulf)arsenides (safflorite, arsenopyrite), and arsenates (erythrite and annabergite). Site A contained a higher and lower amount of (sulf)arsenides and arsenates than site B, respectively. Contrary to site A and B, site C depicted a distinct zoning with (sulf)arsenides found in the deeper reduced zone, and arsenates occurring in the shallow oxidized zone. Variations in the abundance of Co+As+Sb+Zn (Co#), Fe (Fe#), total S (S#), and average valence of As indicated differences in the mineralogical composition of the tailings material. For example, material with a high Co#, lo Fe# and high average valence of As commonly have a higher proportion of secondary arsenate to primary (sulf)arsenide minerals. Microbial community profiling indicated that the Cobalt tailings are primarily composed of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria, and known N, S, Fe, methane, and possible As-cycling bacteria. The tailings from sites B and C had a larger abundance of Fe and S-cycling bacteria (e.g., Sulfurifustis and Thiobacillus), which are more abundant at greater depths, whereas the tailings of site A had a higher proportion of potential As-cycling and -resistant genera (e.g., Methylocystis and Sphingomonas). A multi-variate statistical analysis showed that (1) distinct site-specific groupings occur for the Co # vs. Fe #, Co# vs. S#’s and for the microbial community structure and (2) microbial communities are statistically highly correlated to depth, S#, Fe#, pH and the average valence of As. The variation in As valence correlated well with the abundance of N, S, Fe, and methane-cycling bacteria. The results of this study provide insights into the complex interplay between minerals containing the critical element cobalt, arsenic, and microbial community structure in the Cobalt Mining Camp tailings.

Bacteria, an integral part of aquatic ecosystems, are responsible for the circulation of matter and flow of energy. Since bacterioplankton rapidly responds to any natural and human-induced disturbances in the environment, it can serve as a bioindicator of these changes. Knowing factors that shape the microbial community structure may help the sustainable management of the water environment. However, the identification of environmental signals affecting the structure and function of bacterioplankton is still a challenge. The study analyses the impact of environmental variables on basic microbial parameters, which determines the effectiveness of ecological processes in rivers. Measurements of bacterioplankton abundance (BA) and extracellular enzyme activity (EEA) were based on fluorescent markers. The bacterial community structure was determined by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing (Illumina). The results indicate spatial variation in bacterioplankton abundance. Temporal variation was not significant. Lipase and aminopeptidase had the highest level of activity. EEA was not correlated with bacterial abundance but was significantly correlated with temperature. Moreover, differences in lipase, α-glucosidase and β-glucosidase activity levels between spring and summer were noted. At the same time, the location of sampling site had a significant influence on aminopeptidase activity. The taxonomic analysis of bacterioplankton communities in the Brda River indicated that, although different numbers of OTUs were recorded in the studied river sections, bacterioplankton biodiversity did not change significantly along the river with distance downstream. Anthropogenically modified river sections were characterized by the dominance of Flavobacterium (Bacterioidetes) and hgcl clade (Actinobacteria) taxa, known for their ability to produce extracellular enzymes. PCoA analysis revealed that the sites located in the lower river course (urban area) had the most similar bacterial community structure (β-diversity). The study provides new insight into the changes in microbial communities along the river and emphasizes the potential impact of anthropogenization on these processes.

Bulang districts Batam Islands of  Riau province (Riau Islands), its consists of many islands with as well as having the potential diversity of coastal marine life in particular kinds of macro algae or seaweed. Conducted research aimed to determine the structure of macro- algal communities in the intertidal zone islands. The results of the identification of algal species found 16 species are: the Order of Chlorophyceae as 6 spesies; Order Phaeophyceae as 2 spesies; and Order Rhodophyceae as 8 spesies. The community structure at the five stations showed the highest values were found in the island of dominance Cicir (D ' = 0.79) , uniformity index values on Tengah Island (E ' = 0.99) , while the island Balak had the highest diversity index (H ' = 0.88) , with the abundance patterns of population structure on the island is pretty good Central . Results of correlation analysis of regression between IVI types of algae with the conditions of environmental quality suggests that there is a significance (Fhit ˃ F table and the value of r = > 90 %) between IVI algae Halimeda sp and Cryptarachne polyglandulosa at each station with a temperature parameter surface (⁰C) , depth temperature (⁰C) and pH values. Keywords : Algae, Community Structure, Important Value Index.
