Abstract The paper examines economic efficiency of obtaining wood biomass through accelerated cultivation of pine on postagrogenic lands of the Leningrad Region of Northwest Russia. In experimental pine plantations, we selected model trees and calculated the stem wood biomass of 11-year old stands with different stem densities. Assessments of the economic efficiency of the production of wood chips from pine wood grown on postagrogenic lands were based on a set of machines and mechanisms, consumables and wages. A break-even point was determined for the production of wood chips in plantations with different stem densities. In the variant with a stand density of 2900 trees per hectare, it is possible to make a profit, because a break-even point was obtained for the investments made. Pine stands of such density can be taken as a prototype, when creating and growing short rotation plantations. Based on the results of the study, it is possible to predict a further increase in pine wood biomass in a plantation on post-agrogenic soils. On postagrogenic lands, marketable wood pulp can be obtained within a short period of time; thus such lands will be involved in an economic turnover.

Syngas co-firing in coal fired boilers can be one of the prospective technologies which may help to retrofit some of still functioning older boilers. This study focuses on the results of CFD simulations of wood biomass-derived syngas co-firing with coal in an older mid-sized tangential PC-fired boiler of type OP-230. The design and the implementation of the combustion process predispose the boiler to the connection with the biomass gasifier in which low calorific syngas from solid raw biomass gasification can be produced and next used as a supplemental fuel in the coal furnace. The simulations were performed to predict the influence of the improvement of the air staging via the dual-fuel technique based on the indirect co-firing technology on both the reductions in NOx emissions relative to the baseline (no syngas) and the residence time of syngas particles in a zone with the temperature higher than 1123K. This way one can determine whether the boiler can be recommended to indirect co-firing of syngas derived from agricultural residues biomass or SRF gasification containing such troublesome components as chlorine and alkali.

The aim of this work is to assess the effectiveness of biomass gasification power plants in Russia (Irkutsk region) and compare them with other types of electricity and heat cogeneration systems. Biomass, which is waste from logging and wood processing, is considered as fuel for gasification plants. As a criterion, the cost of energy is used. Analytical relations are obtained for the cost of electric energy at a given cost of thermal energy and vice versa, thermal energy at a given cost of electric energy. These relationships are applied to assess the economic efficiency and compare small-power plants (up to 200–500 kW) such as mini-combined heat and power (CHP) on fuel chips and fuel pellets, coal-fired CHP and gas and liquid fuel power plants (gas-piston and diesel power plants). The latter are equipped with heat recovery boilers and supply consumers with heat and the electric power simultaneously. The calculation results show that the cost of electricity when using wood fuel is significantly less than the cost of electricity from a diesel power plant due to the use of cheaper fuel. In this regard, for autonomous energy systems of small power, especially near logging points, energy supply from biomass gasification power plants is a preferable solution than the use of diesel power plants. Wood fired energy cogeneration systems (mini-CHP) can also successfully compete with coal and gas power plants if they have cheap wood fuel at their location. With the introduction of carbon dioxide emissions charges, the use of not only wood chips, but also pellets becomes competitive in comparison with coal and gas.

In the article the modern state of flax production is investigated. The conditions of development of production and formation of efficiency are substantiated. The economic and social significance of flax production is revealed. Conditions for increasing the production of flaxseed oil have been established. The prospects of increasing economic efficiency are determined.
