Information in patients’ medical histories is subject to various security and privacy concerns. Meanwhile, any modification or error in a patient’s medical data may cause serious or even fatal harm. To protect and transfer this valuable and sensitive information in a secure manner, radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology has been widely adopted in healthcare systems and is being deployed in many hospitals. In this paper, we propose a mutual authentication protocol for RFID tags based on elliptic curve cryptography and advanced encryption standard. Unlike existing authentication protocols, which only send the tag ID securely, the proposed protocol could also send the valuable data stored in the tag in an encrypted pattern. The proposed protocol is not simply a theoretical construct; it has been coded and tested on an experimental RFID tag. The proposed scheme achieves mutual authentication in just two steps and satisfies all the essential security requirements of RFID-based healthcare systems.

Communication via sockets is used to transmit information between applications or between processes over network or locally. ZeroMQ is a library for sending messages using sockets that are quite well known. Talking about sending data, message security is an important part that needs to be taken into account, especially when sending data over a network. ZeroMQ sends messages openly without securing the messages sent. This is evidenced by research which states that ZeroMQ does not have a security layer for sending messages over the network and direct observation of message packets using the wireshark application. Therefore, this study creates a method of securing and authenticating message delivery using AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) CBC (Cipher Block Chaining) mode combined with an authentication method. The AES CBC mode was chosen because it is faster than other methods and has strong encryption. This encryption and authentication are used so that the sender and recipient of the message are both valid senders and recipients so that no message changes during message delivery and messages can only be opened by the message recipient and the sender of the message. Tests are conducted to measure the effect of encryption and authentication on message delivery performance. Based on the tests conducted, there is an increase of 7% from normal delivery speed and the potential for messages is not up to 0.3% - 1.5%.

It is known that password itself is not enough for formidable authentication method since it has a lot of vulnerabilities. Multi factor authentication (MFA) is introduced for the next generation for good authentication to address that issue. MFA combines two or more of three principles of good security, “something you know”, “something you have”, and “something you are”. Most MFA mechanisms work as one time passwords (OTP). However, they can still be vulnerable to phishing and MiTM attack. On top of that, OTP can be hard to use as it requires user to input another password given by the device (SMS, token, authenticator). Implemented in small USB U2F device, FIDO U2F delivers easier yet stronger security on authentication process which implements public key cryptography, challenge-response protocol, and phishing and MitM protection.  Index Terms— Authentication protocol, FIDO U2F, Multi factor authentication, OTP
