1-(2-Methacryloyloxy)ethyl-3-butylimidazolium bromide, a kind of functional ionic liquid containing ester group, was synthesized by two synthesis methods, denoted as thermal heating method and ultrasonic-assisted method. The optimal synthesis condition of the thermal heating method is discussed. Comparison of the two methods shows that ultrasound significantly enhances the efficiency of the reaction. The ultrasonic-assisted method is quite promising in synthesis of ionic liquids with mild condition and high efficiency.

A new series of functionalized ionic liquids containing ester-group were synthesized through a typical two-step way. The physicochemical properties of the functionalized ionic liquids were studied and the tribological properties of them as lubricants for steel-steel contact were evaluated on an SRV friction and wear tester and compared with the perfluoroalkylpolyether (PFPE), a low-volatility and fluorine containing lubricant, and a conventional ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methy imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (LB104), which is nonfunctionalized. Results showed that all the ionic liquids studied in this paper have better lubricities than PFPE as lubricants for steel-steel friction pairs. Functionalized ionic liquids show worse friction reducing abilities at relatively lower loads, which could be ascribed to their higher viscosities, but they always exhibit better anti-wear abilities than LB104. The possible friction mechanisms were discussed.

In the microwave-assisted alcoholysis of dialkyl phenylphosphonates performed in the presence of suitable ionic liquids, such as [bmim][BF4] or [bmim][PF6], affording the phosphonate with mixed alkoxy groups and the fully transesterified product, the fission of the phosphonate function to the ester-acid or diacid moiety was inevitable. Moreover, in the presence of [emim][HSO4], the reaction could be performed to afford the phosphonic esteracid with a selectivity of 66% and the diacid with a selectivity of 97%. The ester-acids provided by the new protocol may be valuable intermediates.
