Solid waste management is a grave concern for Bangladesh as by 2025 waste generation per capita will be 0.75 kg/capita/day and total amount of waste will reach 21.07 million tons per year. This chapter attempts to uncover the facts regarding waste management along with the policies and regulations existing in Bangladesh by reviewing published secondary documents. The chapter also contains emerging issues of agricultural, industrial, hazardous, construction, and electronic generation and 3R practices in Bangladesh. Legal instruments for waste management in Bangladesh are also examined. It has been found that enforcing authorities lack the capacity to implement their strategies regarding 3R practices for waste management. Case studies about community-based approach, waste recycling sector, and medical waste management have been exemplified in this chapter. Finally, the authors apprised the issues and challenges of sustainable solid waste management practices and proposed the way forward for Bangladesh to have sustainable solid waste management.

Solid waste management is considered a pressing global issue calling for an immediate response from the government and its people. The Philippines has a continuously rising amount of waste and is expected to further increase in the succeeding years. As reviewed, associated problems with solid waste management in the country include an increasing amount of solid waste, weak law implementation, scarcity of sanitary landfills, and improper disposal. The ultimate solution existing in the country is the RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 which highlights the practices of segregation, proper disposal, and waste diversion. The importance of envisioning a trash-free Philippines and encouraging people’s participation and awareness is also emphasized. Another possible solution to solid waste management is valorization which can also address other environmental problems such as the depletion of natural resources. These solutions enumerated will only be possible with the presence of good governance, active participation of the people of the country, and the cooperation of all constituents and agencies in the Philippines.

A ten-year integrated solid waste management plan was established for the University of the Philippines Los Baños which complies with the provisions of RA 9003. An end-of-pipe Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) was performed to identify the classification of wastes in UPLB. Waste generation was found to be 593.67 kg/day on the average and is expected to increase by 2% per year which is 709.49 kg/day on the year 2027. The waste composition by weight of the non-biodegradable wastes are as follows: plastic (55.68%); paper (35.77%); glass bottles (5.22%); metal (2.77%); and residuals (0.55%). A large portion of the wastes, which is 99.45% by weight, are recyclables.  The loose density of wastes is 131.93 kg/ m3. Feasible collection points were assigned to improve efficiency of the collection of wastes in the university. Building units inside the campus were clustered and was assigned to dispose wastes to a single temporary storage facility per cluster. There are 181 units of 240-L garbage bin needed for the 39 clusters in UPLB. Two sets of dimensions of a proposed temporary storage facility were provided for the temporary storage facility; 5 2 2.2 m and 3.5 2 2.2 m. Conceptual design and structural plans of the materials recovery facility were provided. Mass balance was performed, and the theoretical diversion efficiency of the materials recovery facility is 99.445%.
