Spent coffee grounds improve the nutritional value in elements of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and are an ecological alternative to inorganic fertilizers

No previous study assessed the combined effect of olive pruning residues (OLPR) and spent coffee grounds (SCG) on P. ostreatus production and nutritional value. The aim of this study was to determine the capacity of P. ostreatus to degrade lignocellulosic nature of combined OLPR and SCG as well as their resultant nutrient composition. A complete randomized design was adopted with five treatments: S1:100%wheat straw (WS) (control), S2:33%WS+33%SCG+33%OLPR,S3:66%WS+17%SCG+17%OLPR,S4:17%WS+66%SCG+17%OLPR, and S5:17%WS+17%SCG+66%OLPR, and ten replicates per treatment. Substrate’s and mushroom’s composition were analyzed on chemical scale, including fatty acids and heavy metals profiles, following international standards. Only S1, S2, and S3 were productive, with comparable biological yield, economical yield, and biological efficiency. Organic matter loss decreased with increasing proportions of OLPR and SCG. Percentage lignin loss was higher in S1 than in S2 and S3 (53.51, 26.25, and 46.15% respectively). Mushrooms of S3 had some enhanced nutritional attributes compared to control: decrease in fat, increase in protein, increase in monounsaturated fatty acids, and lower zinc accumulation. Lead was less accumulated in S2 than S1 mushrooms. Sodium content of mushroom decreased in S2 and S3. The latter substrates yielded mushrooms with lower polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and higher saturated fatty acids (SFA) contents. All mushrooms had a valuable PUFA/SFA. This study suggests using OLPR and SCG in low proportions as nutritional supplements to the commercial wheat straw.

Organic matter and inorganic fertilizer application are important to maintain the existence of potential microbes in the rhizosphere and maintain the soil quality. A greenhouse experiment has been carried out to determine the effect of  vermicompost and NPK fertilizer on total bacterial and Azotobacter  population in rhizosphere and yield of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown in soil order of  Inceptisols. The experimental design was a factorial randomized complete block design with three replicates were tested three doses of vermicompost (7.5, 15 and 22.5 t ha-1) and four doses of inorganic fertilizers; NPK (300; 450; 600 and 750 kg ha-1). The results showed that there was no significant interaction between vermicompost and NPK fertilizer on either total bacterial or Azotobacter population, as well as on fresh weight of lettuce. Both vermicompost and NPK fertilizer did not affect the biological parameters. However, the application of 750 kg/ha NPK fertilizer can increased lettuce weight up to 24% compared to that of control. This study suggested that in the relatively poor soil nutrients, lettuce growth was depend on inorganic fertilizers.

Sistem hidroponik memungkinkan sayuran ditanam di daerah yang kurang subur dan daerah sempit yang padat penduduknya. Alasan penerapan teknik hidroponik yang utama adalah karena terbatasnya lahan pertanian yang produktif untuk memenuhi kebutuhan manusia yang semakin banyak tiap tahunnya, sehingga dibutuhkan suatu terobosan baru untuk memecahkan masalah tersebut. Penelitian ini telah dilaksanakan pada bulan November 2015 sampai bulan Januari 2016 yang bertempat di kampus Fakultas Pertanian Jl. Propinsi Kecamatan Tembilahan Hulu Kabupaten Indragiri Hilir Propinsi Riau.Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) pola faktorial yang terdiri dari 2 faktor. Faktor pertama adalah jenis POC (N) yang terdiri dari 3 taraf perlakuan yaitu POC Jus Bumi, POC Bonggol Pisang danPOC Limbah Sayuran. Faktor kedua adalah konsentrasi larutan (K) yang terdiri dari 3 taraf perlakuan yaitu 150 ppm, 200 ppm dan 250 ppm. Parameter pengamatan adalah Tinggi Tanaman , Jumlah Daun , Luas Daun , Diameter Batang, Panjang akar ,Volume Akar, Kadar Air, dan Bobot Hasil.Hasil pengamatan menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan jenis POC jus bumi dengan konsentrasi larutan 150 ppm memberikan pertumbuhan dan produksi terbaik untuk tanaman selada secara hidroponik sistem wick. Perlakuan jenis POC limbah sayuran dengan konsentrasi 250 ppm memberikan pertumbuhan dan produksi terbaik selain POC jus bumi sehingga dapat dijadikan sumber POC alternatif.
