AbstractIn this paper, a competent flat gain hybrid optical amplifier is proposed with an optimum arrangement of erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and Raman amplifier. Attempts are made to design a hybrid optical amplifier for100 channels, 10 Gbps super dense wavelength division multiplexed (SDWDM) systems at channel spacing of 0.1 nm. Work capacity of the system was compared on the basis of various parameters, viz., noise figure and gain that determined the performance of the system. The gain spectrum of the hybrid optical amplifier depends upon the parameters viz., laser input power, pump power and pump wavelength of the amplifier. It was found that for wavelength range 1,560.38–1,579.59 nm, a flat gain of 4.34 dB is achieved for input power of −10 dB with noise figure variation of 0.818 dB without using any gain flattering scheme. Being simple and cost effective, this hybrid optical amplifier could be recommended for gain flatness characteristics and acceptable noise figure for dense wavelength multiplexed systems.

AbstractNonlinearity, flat gain and noise figure are the prime concern for super dense wavelength division multiplexing (SD-WDM) systems which have been resolved from RAMAN-RSOA hybrid optical amplifier (HOA) for the first time in this paper. Channel capacity is taken up to 400 with data rate of 10 Gbps. Performances are evaluated with respect to C + L + U band for 1520–1680 nm and 1520 to 1640 nm. RSOA is operated at 40–120 mA bias current to attain best rating flat gain of 34.07 dB with variation of 3.5 dB than the others HOAs (RAMAN-EDFA, RAMAN-SOA and EDFA-SOA). Moreover, the impact of EDFA-SOA is not acceptable in terms of noise figure for SD-WDM optical communication system.

Abstract Flat gain with least noise figure (NF) is the backbone feature of super dense wavelength division multiplexing (SD-WDM) system. It indicates the good amplification in terms of high-quality factor, lowest bit error rate, and good rating output power. But in this paper, we have mainly focused on characteristics of proposed EDFA-TDFA hybrid optical amplifier (HOA) in terms of flat gain and noise figure for C-Band. Evaluation has done for 400 x 2.455 Gb/s SD-WDM system with channel spacing of 0.8 nm. Moreover, effect of proposed HOA also observed with displacement of channel wavelength for evaluating the impact of different set of HOA for analysis the same characteristics.
