Herein, we report the dissolution of CN in environment-friendly methane sulfonic acid and the homogeneous photocatalysis driven by CN for the first time with the activity boosted up to 10-times, comparing to the heterogeneous counterparts. Moreover, facile recycling and reusability, the <a>hallmark</a> of heterogeneous catalysts, were kept for the homogeneous CN photocatalyst via reversible precipitation using poor solvents. It opens new vista of CN in homogeneous catalysis and offers a successful example of polymeric catalysts in bridging gaps of homo/heterogeneous catalysis.

Polymeric graphitic carbon nitride materials have attracted significant interest in recent years and found applications in diverse light-to-energy conversions such as artificial photosynthesis, CO2 reduction or degradation of organic pollutants. However, their utilization in synthetic photocatalysis especially in the direct functionalization of C(sp3)−H bonds remains underexplored. Herein, we report mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-CN) as a heterogeneous organic semiconductor photocatalyst for direct arylation of sp3 C−H bonds <i>via </i>a combination of<i> </i>hydrogen atom transfer and nickel catalysis. Our protocol has a broad synthetic scope (>70 examples including late-stage modification of densely functionalized bio-active molecules), is operationally simple, and shows high chemo- and regioselectivity. Facile separation and recycling of the mpg-CN catalyst in combination with its low preparation cost, innate photochemical stability and low toxicity are beneficial features overcoming typical shortcomings of homogeneous photocatalysis. Additionally, mechanistic investigations indicate that an unprecedented energy transfer process (EnT) from the organic semiconductor to the nickel complex is operating.

The effect of different heterogeneous and homogeneous photocatalytic systems on the oxidative degradation of mepiquat chloride in aqueous solutions was investigated. In the case of heterogeneous reactions, the influence of five factors was studied: the type of catalyst, photocatalyst concentration, pH, pesticide concentration, and the presence of H2O2and/or Fe3+. For homogeneous catalysis, other factors were studied: the oxidising agent and the light source. Nearly complete degradation of mepiquat chloride was obtained after about 180 minutes in the presence of an acid medium (pH3) using a UV-A lamp and TiO2P-25 catalyst (0.5 g/L), for an initial pesticide concentration of 10 ppm. Degradation rates corresponding to homogeneous photocatalysis were lower compared to those corresponding to the use of TiO2as the photocatalyst.

After dissolution, a homogeneous carbon nitride photocatalyst showed boosted activity; meanwhile, the hallmarks of heterogeneous catalysts (facile separation and recycling) were retained.
