Synthesis and immobilization of caltrop cupric particles onto a Si substrate using X-ray radiolysis directly from a liquid solution of Cu(COOCH3)2 is demonstrated. Caltrop cupric oxide particles are formed in the X-ray radiolysis of aqueous solutions of Cu(COOCH3)2, which also contain methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol or 1-propanol as ^\bulletOH scavenger. The blade lengths of the caltrop particles are dependent on the alcohol chain length. In particular, it was found that an alkyl alcohol whose chain length is longer than four is unable to synthesize any particles in aqueous solutions of Cu(COOCH3)2 in X-ray radiolysis. These results are attributed to the alkyl alcohol chain length influencing the rate of reaction of radicals and determines the solvable ratio of its alcohol into water. In addition, it was found that the synthesized particle geometric structure and composition can also be controlled by the pH of the aqueous solution in the X-ray radiolysis. This study may open a door to understanding and investigating a novel photochemical reaction route induced under X-ray irradiation. The development of the X-ray radiolysis process enables us to achieve the rapid and easy process of synthesis and immobilization of higher-order nano/microstructure consisting of various materials.

The amphiphilic polyzwitterion (PZ) poly(ethylene oxide-b-N,N-dimethyl(methacryloyloxyethyl) ammonium propanesulfonate), zwitterionic surfactant (ZS) n-dodecyl- N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonium-1-propanesulfonate, and zwitterionic monomer (ZM) N,Ndimethyl( methacryloyloxyethyl)ammonium propanesulfonate were analyzed for their suggested chaperone-like effect on the interaction of C1q and IgG. Our results proved that the PZ retarded the C1q interaction with IgG, demonstrating a specific protein-folding helper effect. The ZS enhanced this interaction, when the ZS concentration was lower than the critical micelle concentration (CMC), and retarded it, when the ZS concentration was above the CMC. The ZM, with no self-assembling ability, did not influence this interaction. These results support the hypothesis of a hydrophobic interaction between Pts and hydrophobic domains of partly denatured protein molecules. The amphiphilic self-assemblies, formed by polyzwitterionic macromolecules or zwitterionic surfactants, have the ability to transform the hydrophobic domains of the protein molecules into hydrophilic ones, covering them with their hydrophilic parts.

Four anionic maleic monoester carboxylate polymeric surfactants were synthesized by the reaction of maleic anhydride with linear alcohols of different chain length in the ratio of 1:1.1 under 80 °C. Then the intermediate products were neutralized by sodium hydroxide at 60 °C to produce the final monomers. The structures of products were confirmed by FTIR. The surface tension was measured at 45 °C and the thermodynamic parameters were calculated. The results show that the polymeric surfactants possess low critical micelle concentration (CMC), high adsorption affinities and good surface and interfacial activity.
