The Impact

Ultrasound is an appealing tool to assess body composition, combining the portability of a field method with the accuracy of a laboratory method. However, unlike other body composition methods, the effect of hydration status on validity is unknown. This study evaluated the impact of acute hydration changes on ultrasound measurements of subcutaneous fat thickness and estimates of body fat percentage. In a crossover design, 11 adults (27.1 ± 10.5 years) completed dehydration and hyperhydration trials to alter body mass by approximately ±2%. Dehydration was achieved via humid heat (40 °C, 60% relative humidity) with exercise, whereas hyperhydration was via ingestion of lightly salted water. Ultrasound measurements were taken at 11 body sites before and after each treatment. Participants lost 1.56 ± 0.58 kg (−2.0 ± 0.6%) during the dehydration trial and gained 0.90 ± 0.21 kg (1.2 ± 0.2%) during the hyperhydration trial even after urination. The sum of fat thicknesses as measured by ultrasound differed by <0.90 mm across trials (p = .588), and ultrasound estimates of body fat percentage differed by <0.5% body fat. Ultrasound measures of subcutaneous adipose tissue were unaffected by acute changes in hydration status by extents beyond which are rare and overtly self-correcting, suggesting that this method provides reliable and robust body composition results even when subjects are not euhydrated.

Purpose: This study aims to observe the effects of at home Pilates exercise, using a real-time web program in postpartum women where measurements of body composition, abdominal obesity, pelvic tilt, back pain and Oswestry Disability Index will be taken.Methods: Subjects included postpartum women under the age of 45 that were registered at the C Cultural Women’s Center in Bundang, Gyeonggi-do. All subjects were within 1 year of childbirth, had no medical opinion and were not receiving medication. A total of 16 people were enrolled in this experiment, which consisted of a Pilates Exercise group (EX, n=8) and a control group (CON, n=8). Measurements of body composition, abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness and circumference, pelvic tilt, pelvic strength, and back pain index were all assessed prior to being exposed to experimental measures. After 8 weeks of un-tact home Pilates exercise, a followup examination was conducted to observe the group-specific changes.Results: The group that participated in the un-tact home Pilates exercise showed a decrease in body fat, BMI, and visceral fat postpartum. Abdominal obesity tests showed a significant reduction in subcutaneous fat thickness, abdominal and hip circumference. The pelvic tilt test showed a reduction in the pelvic slope of the EX-group. Finally, the Oswestry Disabililty Index test showed the total score of the EX-group had decreased, confirming that Pilates exercise in this study was effective for back pain.Conclusions: Thus, un-tact home Pilates exercise using a real time web program is an effective intervention that can be used to prevent postpartum obesity by reducing abdominal and total body adiposity postpartum, assisting pelvic function, and improving muscle strength while also reducing back pain.

The Relationship

Ultrasound echo intensity (EI) values are a popular assessment of muscle quality. The relationship between EI and total (%fat) and regional (%fatlimb) body composition was examined in 40 men, prior to and after accounting for subcutaneous fat thickness. Uncorrected EI values suggest that muscle quality improves (r = –0.329 to –0.224; P = 0.038–0.165) with greater %fat and %fatlimb. However, corrected EI values indicated that muscle quality decreases (r = 0.711 to 0.798; P < 0.001) with greater %fat and %fatlimb.
