Cyclic voltammetry measurements on imidazolic ionic liquids with sulfonic acid groups and bisulfate counterions revealed that they work as efficient reservoirs of sulfuric acid and are able to dose it on demand to uphold an efficient acid catalysis.

Biodiesel was prepared fromCitrullus colocynthisoil (CCO) via a two-step process. The first esterification step was explored in two ionic liquids (ILs) with 1,3-disulfonic acid imidazolium hydrogen sulfate (DSIMHSO4) and 3-methyl-1-sulfonic acid imidazolium hydrogen sulfate (MSIMHSO4). Both ILs appeared to be good candidates to replace hazardous acidic catalyst due to their exceptional properties. However, the two sulfonic chains existing in DSIMHSO4were found to increase the acidity to the IL than the single sulfonic chain in MSIMHSO4. Based on the results, 3.6 wt% of DSIMHSO4, methanol/CCO molar ratio of 12 : 1, and 150°C offered a final FFA conversion of 95.4% within 105 min. A 98.2% was produced via second KOH-catalyzed step in 1.0%, 6 : 1 molar ratio, 600 rpm, and 60°C for 50 min. This new two-step catalyzed process could solve the corrosion and environmental problems associated with the current acidic catalysts.

Preparation of biodiesel from tung oil catalyzed by five Brǒnsted acidic ionic liquids (ILs) with propyl sulfonic acid group was investigated. These ILs show good catalytic activity for the transeserification of tung oil. Among these ILs, [C3SO3Hmim]HSO4 showed a highest catalytic activity. In addition, these ionic liquids had a good reusability and could be easily separated from the biodiesel.

The catalytic efficiency of 1,1′-butylenebis(3-sulfo-3H-imidazol-1-ium) chloride as a sulfonic acid-functionalized ionic liquid was demonstrated for the synthesis of pyrrolidinone derivatives under mild conditions. The electronic effect of substituents on aniline derivatives was investigated. Further, a study on the structure–activity relationship of ionic liquids containing sulfonic groups for the synthesis of ethyl-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-hydroxy-5-oxo-1-(p-tolyl)-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylate was performed under optimal conditions. The results showed that the catalytic properties of ionic liquids containing two sulfonic or imidazole moieties with carbon spacers was superior to ionic liquids having one sulfonic or imidazole moiety with no carbon spacer.

Alkylsulfuric acid ILs are simple to make and offer a more strongly acidic alternative to sulfonic acid ILs for applications in catalysis, metal extraction and dissolution of metal oxides.
