This article reports on the Dielectric Relaxation Studies of two Liquid Crystalline compounds - 7O.4 and 7O.6 - doped with dodecanethiol capped Silver Nanoparticles. The liquid crystal molecules are aligned homeotropically using CTAB. The low frequency relaxation process occurring above 1 MHz is fitted to Cole-Cole formula using the software Dielectric Spectra fit. The effect of the Silver Nanoparticles on the molecular dipole dynamics are discussed in terms of the fitted relaxation times, Cole-Cole distribution parameter and activation energy. The study indicate a local molecular rearrangement of the liquid crystal molecules without affecting the order of the bulk liquid crystal molecules but these local molecules surrounding the Silver Nanoparticles do not contribute to the relaxation process in the studied frequency range. The observed effect on activation energy suggests a change in interaction between the nanoparticles/liquid crystal molecules.

We demonstrate a laser beam combiner based on four photo-patterned Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) phase gratings, which is compact and has high diffraction efficiency for incident circularly polarized light. The nematic liquid crystal mixture E7 is used as anisotropic material, and the thickness of the layer is controlled by spacers. The beam combiner can bring two parallel laser beams closer to each other while remaining parallel. This work shows the potential to realize components based on flat optical LC devices.

Over most of each active region in nematic and chiral nematic twist cells the motion and configuration of the liquid crystal layer does not vary appreciably with position parallel to the surfaces. In such laminar regions the statics, dynamics and optics ot the cell can be accurately simulated at low cost on a computer of moderate size, given the appropriate physical parameters. Methods and recent advances in simulation of laminar regions are reviewed. Bistable twist cells are simulated for illustration. Important problems of stability and edge effects in the presence of electric fields await solution with two- or three-dimensional simulations.
