Microstructure evolution of a nickel-base single crystal superalloy during thermal exposure at 982°C was investigated. The SEM studies revealed that the size of γ' phase increased and some of which linked together with the elongation of the exposure time. There is acicular phase precipitation after the long-term ageing treatment. The TCP phase is not increased by the increment of ageing time after reaching a certain amount. There are skeleton shape carbides precipitate after 100h and 300h. The amount of precipitated carbides decreases by the elongation of ageing time.

Investigation of γ -channel widening behavior in a nickel-base single crystal superalloy during uniaxial tensile creep tests was carried out. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was adopted to reveal the microstructural evolution of γ -channel and the dimension of γ -channel. It was found that different tests condition such as temperature, time and stress in tensile creep tests all influenced the γ -channel widening behavior, and a parabolic rate law governs the mean increase value of γ -channel width. The stress and temperature enhanced the γ -channel widening. The γ -channel widening was the result of directionally diffusion of multiatom.

By means of tensile and compression creep testing and SEM, TEM observation, an investigation has been made into the microstructure evolution of a single crystal nickel base superalloy during tensile / compression creep. Results show that the cubic γ′ phase in the superalloy is transformed into the N-type meshlike structure along the direction vertical to stress axis during tensile creep. The cubic γ′ phase is transformed into the P-type structure along the direction parallel to stress axis during compression creep. An obvious asymmetry strain of the alloy occurs during tensile and compression creep, the formation of the needle-like γ′ rafts during compression creep is a main reason of the alloy displaying a smaller strain. During compressive creep, the deformation feature of the alloy is the <110> and (1/3) <112> super dislocations shearing into the γ′ rafts. The deformation mechanism of the alloy, in the stage state of tensile creep, is dislocation climb over the γ′ rafts.

Microstructure evolution of a nickel-base single crystal superalloy on the [001], [011] and [111] orientation during thermal exposure at 1000°C was investigated. The SEM studies revealed that the size of γ' phase increased and some of which linked together with the elongation of the exposure time. After 1100h the cubic γ' phase hardly is observed, and the rafting structure becomes perfect. With growing and linking of γ' phase the γ matrix channel is widening gradually, and the direction of γ' rafts is not along one define orientation. The TCP phase is not found in the three oriented samples during the thermal exposure.

The profiles of 001 and 002 reflections have been measured at 1173 K as a function of time by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) on tensile-creep deformed specimens of single crystal superalloy SC16. Decrease in line width (full width at half maximum: FWHM) by about 7 % and increase in peak position by about 3x10-4 degrees was detected after 8.5x104 s. Broadening of the 002 peak profile indicated a more negative value of the lattice misfit after the same time period. The results are discussed in the context of the anisotropic arrangement of dislocations at the γ/γ’ interfaces during creep and their rearrangement during the thermal treatment at 1173 K.
