Effect of microstructure on hot tensile deformation behavior of 7075 alloy sheet fabricated by twin roll casting

In this paper, to investigate the effect of loading method of pulse current on the tensile deformation behavior of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet, the intermittent pulse current with short-time and high-frequency was introduced in uniaxial tensile tests and the influence of duty ratio and loading time of pulse current on the deformation behavior of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet was discussed. The strain and temperature field distributions on the specimens were measured during the intermittent pulse electrically-assisted tension (IPEAT), and the microstructure and fracture morphology under different pulse current conditions were observed. Results shows appropriate pulse current parameters can effectively improve the elongation of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet. The strain of the sample is closely related to temperature distribution. With the deformation of the sample, the temperature on the sample increases gradually and the temperature distribution is non-uniform along the tensile direction, resulting in an inhomogeneous strain distribution of the sample. In addition, grain growth and dynamic recrystallization were observed on the AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet in different degrees under intermittent pulse current. Fracture morphology analysis shows that the number of dimples and tearing edges increased on the fracture obtained under IPEAT. The microhardness analysis shows that when intermittent pulse current is applied in the tensile test, the hardness of the sheet may change. This research provides an effective idea for the forming process of magnesium alloy sheets, which can be used to form large size thin-walled sheet components, and can significantly improve the forming quality of the sheets.

An attempt has been made to clad Mg alloy with Al by twin-roll casting. This was done by inserting an Al sheet between the roll and the Mg alloy melt during twin-roll casting. Microstructural investigation across the transverse section of the as-cast Al-clad Mg alloy sheet reveals a very good interfacial bonding between Al and the base Mg alloy. Annealing of the Al-clad Mg alloy sheet results in the formation of layers of various intermetallic phases along the Mg/Al interface. Subsequent rolling of the as-annealed sheet significantly improves the formability of the reaction zone, as evidenced by the cracking of the base Mg alloy before the cracking of the reaction zone.

Uniaxial tensile deformation behavior of 5A90 aluminium-lithium alloy sheet is investigated in the hot forming with the temperature range of 200-450°C and strain rate range of 0.3×10-3-0.2×10-1s-1. It is found that the flow stress of 5A90 Al-Li alloy in uniaxial tension increase with increasing strain rate and decrease with increasing temperature, however, the tendency of total elongation is just the reverse, and the optimum forming temperature is 400°C. The strain rate sensitivity index (m-value) remarkably increases with increasing temperature for a given strain rate. It is shown that 5A90 Al-Li alloy sheet displays the sensitivity to the strain rate at elevated temperatures. For a given strain rate, the strain hardening index (n-value) decreases with increasing temperature, whereas the n-value increases above 350°C. The constitutive equation of stress, strain and strain rate for 5A90 Al-Li alloy at any temperature is obtained by fitting the experimental data, which gave a good flow stress model for the FEM simulation of hot forming.
