The differential cross section for the production of electron pairs by muons has been obtained under the assumption that all particles are relativistic and that the Thomas–Fermi model can be used to evaluate the effect of screening. Analytical expressions have been obtained for the energy loss of muons by pair production for the two extreme cases of "no screening" and "complete screening". Results of numerical calculation of energy loss by this process are given as a function of muon energy, for rock with Z = 11.

Abstract Using the differential cross section for electron-electron (e-e) bremsstrahlung exact to lowest-order perturbation theory the bremsstrahlung spectra and the total rate of energy loss of a hot electron gas are calculated. The results are compared to the nonrelativistic and extreme-relativistic approximations available and to previous work. The e-e contribution to the bremsstrahlung emis-sion of a hydrogenic plasma is found to be not negligible at temperatures above ≈ 108 K, especially in the short-wavelength part of the spectrum.

It is pointed out that the y-dependence of the differential cross-section for various types of neutrinos on the electron promises to be a sensitive testing ground of the electroweak Standard Model at KAON in Vancouver. Estimates of the flux requirements are given and the feasibility of such experiments is discussed.
