The identification of the oil-source correlation plays a significant role in petroleum exploration and development. In this study, we identify the oil-source correlation by a hierarchical cluster analysis method combined with traditional methods. The results shed light on the oil-source correlation in Minfeng area and revealed the oil migration and accumulation process. The crude oil in different structural belts and different horizons has different geochemical characteristics. According to the four types of crude oil and their planner distribution, it was considered that the crude oil mainly migrates along with favorable sand bodies and unconformity surfaces in the lateral direction and then charged and accumulated in the glutenite of Sha3 and Sha4 members since the area from sag to Yan Jia Oil and the gas field was lacking of oil source faults. Further analysis shows that the traps of fault blocks in Yong’anzhen are formed in the same phase, while the crude oil generated in the early stage is charged and accumulated in the fault block of the near source. Along with increasing of the buried depth of source rocks, the overlying source rocks gradually entered into the hydrocarbon generation phase, when crude oil started to charge in the fault blocks farther away.

AbstractThe characteristics of petroliferous plays in subtle traps within a sequence stratigraphic framework in the Dongying Depression are investigated in this study. Sand bodies within lowstand systems tracts (LSTs) of sequences, comprising incised-channel fills, sublacustrine fans, deltas in LSTs, controlled by syndepositional normal faults, and sand bodies within transgressive systems tracts (TSTs) to early highstand systems tracts (HSTs), consisting of beach bars, and turbidites, controlled by the prodelta slope, paleorelief, and syndepositional normal faults, are good subtle reservoirs. Mudstones and shale of deep lake subfacies in TSTs to early HSTs of sequences are source and cap rocks. Abnormal overpressure is the dominant dynamic factor for hydrocarbon migration from source rock to the subtle traps. Normal faults, sand bodies, and unconformities function as conduit systems. Sand bodies distributed in the abnormal overpressure source rocks within LSTs to early HSTs are petroliferous plays in lithologic traps. The petroliferous plays in stratigraphic traps are controlled by unconformities at margins of the Depression.

The hydrocarbons discovered to date on the southern margin of Australia have been assigned to the Austral Petroleum Supersystem based on the age of their source rocks and common tectonic history. Modelling of the source facies distribution within this supersystem using tectonic, climatic and geographic history of the southern margin basins, suggests the presence of a variety of source rocks deposited in saline playa lakes, fluvial, lacustrine, deltaic and anoxic marine environments.Testing of the palaeogeographic model using geochemical characteristics of liquid hydrocarbons confirms the three-fold subdivision (Al, A2 and A3) of the Austral Petroleum Supersystem.Bass Basin oils are assigned to the Austral 3, Eastern View Petroleum System. The presence of oleanane in the biomarker assemblages of these oils, together with their negatively sloping, heavy, isotopic profiles, indicate derivation from Upper Cretaceous-Tertiary fluvio–deltaic source facies.In the eastern Otway Basin, oils of the Austral 2, Eumeralla Petroleum System are sourced by Lower Cretaceous (Aptian–Albian) coaly facies. Oil shows reservoired in the Wigunda Formation at Greenly-1 in the Duntroon Basin are possibly sourced from the Borda Formation and are assigned to the Austral 2, Borda Petroleum System.In the western Otway, Duntroon and Bight basins, a lack of definitive oil-source rock correlations precludes the identification of individual Austral 1 petroleum systems.
