The intermittent nature of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind necessitates integration with energy-storage units to enable realistic applications. In this study, thermal performance enhancement of the finned Cylindrical Thermal Energy Storage (C-TES) with nano-enhanced Phase Change Material (PCM) integrated with the water heating system under Storage, Charging and Discharging (SCD) conditions were investigated experimentally. The effects of the addition of copper oxide (CuO) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles in PCM on thermal conductivity, specific heat, and on charging and discharging performance rates were theoretically and experimentally investigated and studied in detail. The experimental apparatus utilized paraffin wax as PCM, which was filled in Finned C-TES to conduct the experiments. The experimental results showed a positive improvement compared with the non-nano additive PCM. The significance and originality of this project lies within the evaluation and identification of preferable metal-oxides with higher potential for improving thermal performance.

With the rapid development of industrialization, the excessive use of fossil fuels has caused problems such as increased greenhouse gas emissions and energy shortages. The development and use of renewable energy has attracted increased attention. In recent years, solar heat pump heating technology that uses clean solar energy combined with high-efficiency heat pump units is the development direction of clean heating in winter in northern regions. However, the use of solar energy is intermittent and unstable. The low-valley electricity policy is a night-time electricity price policy. Heat pump heating has problems such as frosting and low efficiencies in cold northern regions. To solve these problems, an exergy analysis model of each component of a phase-change heat-storage coupled solar heat pump heating system was established. Exergy analysis was performed on each component of the system to determine the direction of optimization and improvement of the phase-change heat-storage coupled solar heat pump heating system. The results showed that optimizing the heating-end heat exchanger of the system can reduce the exergy loss of the system. When the phase-change heat-storage tank meets the heating demand, its volume should be reduced to lower the exergy loss of the tank heat dissipation. Air-type solar collectors can increase the income exergies of solar collectors.

The floor heating system with phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal storage is an effective approach to increase the floor thermal capacity and reduce indoor temperature fluctuation range. A two-dimensional numerical model of the floor heating system combined with PCM was developed to investigate its dynamic thermal performance in winter. To verify the reliability of the model, an experimental room was established in Beijing, China. The experiment results agreed well with the modelling results, which demonstrated that the numerical model was reliable. The effects of the phase change temperature, latent heat and thermal conductivity of PCM on the thermal performance of the floor were numerically investigated. The results showed that the phase change temperature and thermal conductivity of PCM had a significant influence on thermal comfort. At the same time, these two thermal physical parameters also played a critical role in improving the utilization rate of PCM. Conversely, the latent heat, in the range of 100 to 200 kJ/kg, had no obvious influence on the thermal performance of the floor. PCM with phase change temperature of 313 K was recommended, which could increase the average indoor temperature by 2.2 K, increase the thermal energy storage ratio by 12% and reduce indoor temperature fluctuation range by 2.2 K.
