Developing an improved global solar radiation map for Zimbabwe through correlating long-term ground- and satellite-based monthly clearness index values

Abstract. A 1-year intercomparison of classical and modern radiation and sunshine duration instruments has been performed at Izaña Atmospheric Observatory (IZO) located in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) starting on July 17, 2014. We compare global solar radiation (GSR) records measured with a CM-21 pyranometer Kipp & Zonen, taken in the framework of the Baseline Surface Radiation Network, with those measured with a Multifilter Rotating Shadowband Radiometer (MFRSR), and a bimetallic pyranometer (PYR), and GSR estimated from sunshine duration performed by a Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder (CS) and a Kipp & Zonen sunshine duration sensor (CSD). Given the GSR BSRN records are subject of strict quality controls (based on principles of physical limits and comparison with the LibRadtran model), they have been used as reference in the intercomparison study. We obtain an overall root mean square error (RMSE) of ~0.9 MJm2 (4 %) for GSR PYR and GSR MFRSR, 1.9 MJm2 (7 %) and 1.2 MJm2 (5 %) for GSR CS and GSR CSD, respectively. Factors such as temperature, fraction of the clear sky, relative humidity and the solar zenith angle have shown to moderately affect the GSR observations. As application of the methodology developed in this work, we have re-evaluated the GSR time series between 1977 and 1991 obtained with two PYRs at IZO. By comparing with coincident GSR estimates from SD observations, we probe the high consistency of those measurements and their temporal stability. These results demonstrate that 1) the continuous-basis intercomparison of different GSR techniques offers important diagnostics for identifying inconsistencies between GSR data records, and 2) the GSR measurements performed with classical and more simple instruments are consistent with more modern techniques and, thus, valid to recover GSR time series and complete worldwide distributed GSR data. The intercomparison and quality assessment of these different techniques have allowed to obtain a complete and consistent long-term global solar radiation series (1977–2015) at Izaña.

A modified typical meteorological year (TMY) method is proposed for generating TMY from practical measured weather data. A total of eleven weather indices and novel assigned weighting factors are applied in the processing of forming the TMY database. TMYs of 35 cities in China are generated based on the latest and accurate measured weather data (dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, wind velocity, atmospheric pressure, and daily global solar radiation) in the period of 1994–2010. The TMY data and typical solar radiation data are also investigated and analyzed in this paper, which are important in the utilizations of solar energy systems.

Abstract The clearness index for hourly and daily radiation is an important parameter in describing solar radiation. Liu and Jordan demonstrated that the monthly average daily clearness index could be used to predict the long-term distribution of daily solar radiation in a month. This paper reviews recent literature on the prediction of hourly and daily frequency distributions and cumulative frequency distributions of clearness indices. Ten years of measured weather data for six cities in the US are used to investigate the nature of the hourly and daily frequency distributions. A second set of ten years of data for six cities is used to verify the predictions. A bi-exponential probability density function is proposed that fits the observed bimodal nature of the data better than existing models. A case is made for the function being universal.

The energy generation efficiency of Building Intergraded Photovoltaic Systems (BIPV) system relies much on the panel’s surface solar radiation received. In the projection of annual power generation of photovoltaic panels, local global solar radiation plays a pivotal role for reliable estimation process. The purpose of this paper is to develop an hourly typical solar radiation year (TSRY) as fundamental meteorological database for utilizing the estimation process. The TSRY should be interpretable to local long-term climate variations, thus, ten years' hourly meteorological data were gathered to formulate a typical year by means of modified Sandia method herein. A total of four cities' hourly typical years from northern to southern Taiwan were established in this paper. Orientation and inclination effect of the PV panel were also discussed in terms of daily averaged global solar radiation that cumulate from TSRY.

Solar radiation data are of great significance for solar energy systems. This study aimed to estimate monthly and seasonal average of daily global solar radiation on a horizontal surface in Pokhara (Lat.:28.21o N, Long.: 84o E and alt. 827 m above sea level), Nepal, by using CMP6 pyranometer in 2015. As a result of this measurement, monthly and yearly mean solar radiation values were 20.37 ±5.62 MJ/m2/ day in May, 11.37 ± 2.38 MJ/m2/ day in December and 16.82 ±5.24 MJ/m2/ day respectively. Annual average of clearness index and extinction coefficient are 0.51±0.14 and 0.53±0.31 respectively. There is positive correlation of maximum temperature and negative correlation of with global solar radiation.

Abstract Studying solar radiation is essential for human knowledge, since it is present in practically all its activities. Thus, the aim of this work was to analyze the climatic and seasonal variation of direct normal and global solar radiation in the region of Maceió, Alagoas State, Northeastern Brazil with sky conditions characterized by clearness index (Kt). The Kt was determined by the ratio between global solar irradiance and solar irradiance at the top of the atmosphere. The highest occurrences of daily direct normal solar irradiance under conditions of Kt ≥ 0.6 were recorded between 400 W m−2 and 700 W m−2 for all seasons. Under conditions of 0.4 ≤ Kt < 0.6, the daily direct normal solar irradiance occurred between 200 W m−2 and 500 W m−2 and for conditions of Kt < 0.4, its maximum value was 200 W m−2. It was observed that the levels of solar incidence in the study region depend on cloud cover conditions, with little influence of seasonality.
