The task of choosing a route to move from A to B is not trivial, as road networks in metropolitan areas tend to be over crowded. It is important to adapt on the fly to the traffic situation. One way to help road users (driver or autonomous vehicles for that matter) is by using modern communication technologies.In particular, there are reasons to believe that the use of communication between the infrastructure (network), and the demand (vehicles) will be a reality in the near future. In this paper, we use car-to-infrastructure (C2I) communication to investigate whether the road users can accelerate their learning processes regarding route choice by using reinforcement learning (RL). The kernel of our method is a two way communication, where road users communicate their rewards to the infrastructure, which, in turn, aggregate this information locally and pass it to other users, in order to accelerate their learning tasks. We employ a microscopic simulator in order to compare this method with two others (one based on RL without communication and a classical iterative method for traffic assignment). Experimental results using a grid and a simplification of a real-world network show that our method outperforms both.

This study investigates the potential effect(s) of different dynamic message signs (DMSs) on driver behavior using a full-scale high-fidelity driving simulator. Different DMSs are categorized by their content, structure, and type of messages. A random forest algorithm is used for three separate behavioral analyses—a route diversion analysis, a route choice analysis, and a compliance analysis—to identify the potential and relative influences of different DMSs on these aspects of driver behavior. A total of 390 simulation runs are conducted using a sample of 65 participants from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Results obtained suggest that DMSs displaying lane closure and delay information with advisory messages are most influential with regards to diversion, while color-coded DMSs and DMSs with avoid route advice are the top contributors potentially impacting route choice decisions and DMS compliance. In this first-of-a-kind study, based on the responses to the pre- and post-simulation surveys as well as results obtained from the analysis of driving-simulation-session data, the authors found that color-coded DMSs are more effective than alphanumeric DMSs, especially in scenarios that demand high compliance from drivers. The increased effectiveness may be attributed to reduced comprehension time and ease with which such DMSs are understood by a greater percentage of road users.

This study aims to present the traffic conditions of one of the most congested areas in Yangon as well as the route choice behaviors of the road users in that area. It analyzes drivers’ route choice behaviors and traffic congestion according to road segments. Manual traffic counting and roadside interview methods were used in this survey. The data gathered were used in finding routes alternative to the U Htaung Bo road, which is extremely congested almost all the time. With regard to the report, it will be helpful to identify the scale of the problem that is caused by traffic congestion and to increase awareness of this issue, including amongst the government, policy makers, traffic engineers, and road users.

Route guidance tools have a significant impact on road safety on public roads, as they carry important information on route guidance: provide drivers with information on the location on a specified road, regularly confirm the planned direction of movement, timely inform road users about the change of specified route direction and indicate the distance to the final object. This is very important information for the driver and it is difficult to overestimate it in road safety. Timely informing of drivers on the route direction will allow them carrying out adjustments in advance and feel confident on the road. Ensuring the completeness of route guidance information prevents emergency braking of vehicles in the area of traffic junctions and violation of the maneuvering rules to make a turn / turnaround in the right direction, and such maneuvers lead to road accidents. The establishment of a uniform route guidance system will reduce the road accident level and the cost of transportation due to excessive mileage of vehicles in the case of wrong route and help the drivers freely and easily get to their destination. The main need for information is felt by the drivers of vehicles whose actions directly impact the road safety. This, in turn, determines the basic principles and requirements for the composition, placement and choice of information tools. During the trip, the drivers need the information that would allow them navigating freely on the roads when passing the selected route that will relieve the stress of drivers and reduce the probability of road accidents, as well as increase the capacity of roads. It helps the drivers to adjust the previously selected route taking into account the real traffic conditions during the trip thereby minimizing the time consumption. To navigate the roads during movement, the drivers need the information about streets, objects and directions. Such information is provided by information signs, with which the road network must be equipped in sufficient quantity. The information provision should differ depending on the settlements, public roads and traffic conditions. A comprehensive solution of the issue of quality information provision to the road users can be achieved only by establishing a uniform route guidance system for road users which will take into account the needs for information of different categories of road users.
