AbstractIn the absence of the axiom of choice, the set-theoretic status of many natural statements about metrizable compact spaces is investigated. Some of the statements are provable in $$\mathbf {ZF}$$ ZF , some are shown to be independent of $$\mathbf {ZF}$$ ZF . For independence results, distinct models of $$\mathbf {ZF}$$ ZF and permutation models of $$\mathbf {ZFA}$$ ZFA with transfer theorems of Pincus are applied. New symmetric models of $$\mathbf {ZF}$$ ZF are constructed in each of which the power set of $$\mathbb {R}$$ R is well-orderable, the Continuum Hypothesis is satisfied but a denumerable family of non-empty finite sets can fail to have a choice function, and a compact metrizable space need not be embeddable into the Tychonoff cube $$[0, 1]^{\mathbb {R}}$$ [ 0 , 1 ] R .

This study was designed to compare the effects of speech and speech-plus-sign stimulation during comprehension treatment on the oral language learning and generalization of action + object relational meanings. Ten home-reared Down's syndrome children in Early Stage I received concurrent comprehension treatment in Speech and Speech-Sign conditions using a miniature linguistic system. Upon attainment of criterion level performance in both conditions, generalization tasks were administered to measure the effects of the comprehension treatment on the comprehension and the production of treated and untreated action + object combinations. The results obtained from this study indicated that the two treatment conditions did not differ significantly for either learning or generalization. The data did, however, indicate that individual patterns of acquisition were evident among the children. Caution is advised concerning the automatic adoption or rejection of manual sign as part of oral language intervention programs.

AbstractLet I = [a, b] ⊆ R and let L be an nth order linear differential operator defined on Cn(I). Let 2 ≦ k ≦ n and let a ≦ x1 < x2 < … < xn = b. A method of forced mono tonicity is used to construct monotone sequences that converge to solutions of the conjugate type boundary value problem (BVP) Ly = f(x, y),y(i-1) = rij where 1 ≦i ≦ mj, 1 ≦ j ≦ k, mj = n, and f : I X R → R is continuous. A comparison theorem is employed and the method requires that the Green's function of an associated BVP satisfies certain sign conditions.

AbstractWe consider the system where p(x), q(x) ∈ C1(RN) are radial symmetric functions such that sup|∇ p(x)| < ∞, sup|∇ q(x)| < ∞ and 1 < inf p(x) ≤ sup p(x) < ∞, 1 < inf q(x) ≤ sup q(x) < ∞, where −Δp(x)u = −div(|∇u|p(x)−2∇u), −Δq(x)v = −div(|∇v|q(x)−2∇v), respectively are called p(x)-Laplacian and q(x)-Laplacian, λ1, λ2, μ1 and μ2 are positive parameters and Ω = B(0, R) ⊂ RN is a bounded radial symmetric domain, where R is sufficiently large. We prove the existence of a positive solution when for every M > 0, $\lim_{u \rightarrow +\infty} \frac{h(u)}{u^{p^--1}} = 0$ and $\lim_{u \rightarrow +\infty} \frac{\gamma(u)}{u^{q^--1}} = 0$. In particular, we do not assume any sign conditions on f(0), g(0), h(0) or γ(0).

SynopsisWe study the initial value problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equationUnder suitable regularity assumptions on f and ø and growth and sign conditions on f, it is shown that the maximum norms of solutions to (*) decay as t→² ∞ at the same rate as that of solutions to the free Schrödinger equation.
