Importance of normal microbial flora in human bodies to maintain optimal health cannot be under estimated. Probiotics or live microorganisms confer health benefit in various diseases. Thus potential of probiotics to maintain health and prevent many disorders without significant adverse effects has opened new options for treating various diseases.

The earlier observed pronounced hypogammaglobulinemia in germfree rats of different ages has been confirmed. Using an immunologic technique the concentration of immunologic gamma globulins were found to vary between 10 and 15 per cent of the values observed in ordinary rats. Upon contamination of germfree rats with the normal microbial flora a pronounced lag phase was noted before the gamma globulin level became normal. This lag phase was most pronounced in growing rats. Newborn rats seem to start gamma globulin production more rapidly than older germfree rats. The response with regard to gamma globulin production on contamination of germfree rats with different types of bacterial cells through the natural routes is not identical.

Preseasoned comminuted turkey meat, prepared at the retail level, was examined and revealed the following levels of microbial contamination per gram: mean standard plate count 2.2 × 108, mean coliform plate count 2.0 × 105, Escherichia coli count 8.7. Gram-positive and gram-negative microbial flora were isolated and identified.

The mucosal surface area of the small intestine was determined in young adult, germfree and conventional rats. On the average, the germfree values were found to be 30% lower than those of conventional animals. This reduction was pronounced in the mid- and lower parts of the small intestine and relatively slight in the upper segment. It is assumed that the higher surface area values of conventional rats are due to the "physiologic" stimulation by the normal microbial flora.

Relevance. Antibiotic resistance of microbial pathogens is an interdisciplinary and interstate problem of major medical and socio-economic importance. If multiresistant microbial flora is detected in patients with acute or chronic forms of pelvic inflammatory diseases alternative antimicrobial combined therapy an advisability should be considered. Current trends of an increase in multiresistant gram-negative infections along with limited range of alternative treatment options dictate a need for further research. Study of alternative antibiotics effectiveness in pelvic inflammatory diseases treatment is necessary for a further development of optimal treatment regimens. Aim. To search for adequate combinations of antimicrobial therapy aimed at antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Materials and methods. To write this review a search for domestic and foreign publications in Russian and international search systems (PubMed, eLibrary, etc.) for the last 2-12 years was conducted. The review includes articles from peer-reviewed literature. Results. Fosfomycin possesses a broad spectrum of antibacterial effects including gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic bacteria. The drug is highly effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, anaerobic bacteria (Proteus mirabilis and Klebsiella pneumoniae) as well as against gram- positive bacteria (Staphylococcus spp., including S. aureus, S. epidermidis; Streptococcus spp., including Enterococcus faecalis). Conclusions. When multiresistant microbial flora is detected in patients with acute or chronic forms of pelvic inflammatory diseases an advisability of fosfomycin administration should be considered.
