Since the first discovery of high Tc Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor by Maeda et al, many EM works have been done on it. The results show that the superconducting phases have a type of ordered layer structures similar to that in Y-Ba-Cu-O system formulated in Bi2Sr2Can−1CunO2n+4 (n=1,2,3) (simply called 22(n-1) phase) with lattice constants of a=0.358, b=0.382nm but the length of c being different according to the different value of n in the formulate. Unlike the twin structure observed in the Y-Ba-Cu-O system, there is an incommensurate modulated structure in the superconducting phases of Bi system superconductors. Modulated wavelengths of both 1.3 and 2.7 nm have been observed in the 2212 phase. This communication mainly presents the intergrowth of these two kinds of one-dimensional modulated structures in 2212 phase.

Induced spinodal decomposition under electron irradiation in a Ni-Au alloy has been investigated with respect to its basic mechanism and confirmed to be caused by the relaxation of coherent strain associated with modulated structure. Modulation of white-dots on structure images of modulated structure due to high-resolution electron microscopy is reduced with irradiation. In this paper the atom arrangement of the modulated structure is confirmed with computer simulation on the structure images, and the relaxation of the coherent strain is concluded to be due to the reduction of phase-modulation.Structure images of three-dimensional modulated structure along <100> were taken with the JEM-4000EX high-resolution electron microscope at the HVEM Laboratory, Kyushu University. The transmitted beam and four 200 reflections with their satellites from the modulated structure in an fee Ni-30.0at%Au alloy under illumination of 400keV electrons were used for the structure images under a condition of the spherical aberration constant of the objective lens, Cs = 1mm, the divergence of the beam, α = 3 × 10-4 rad, underfocus, Δf ≃ -50nm and specimen thickness, t ≃ 15nm. The CIHRTEM code was used for the simulation of the structure image.

AbstractFour new mixed-valent chain alkali metal (A) sulfido ferrates of the general structure family ${A}_{1+x}\left[{\text{Fe}}_{x}^{\text{II}}{\text{Fe}}_{1-x}^{\text{III}}{\text{S}}_{2}\right]$ were synthesized in the form of tiny green-metallic needles from nearly stoichiometric melts reacting elemental potassium with natural pyrite (A = K) or previously prepared Rb2S/Cs2S2 with elemental iron and sulfur (A = Rb/Cs). The crystal structures of the compounds were determined by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction: In the (3+1)D modulated structure of K7.15[FeS2]4 (space group Ccce(00σ3)0s0, a = 1363.87(5), b = 2487.23(13), c = 583.47(3) pm, q = 0,0,0.444, R1 = 0.055/0.148, x = 0.787), a position modulation of the two crystallographically different undulated ${}_{\infty }{}^{1}\left[{\text{FeS}}_{4/2}\right]$ tetrahedra chains and the surrounding K cations is associated with an occupation modulation of one of the three potassium sites. In the case of the new monoclinic rubidium ferrate Rb4[FeS2]3 (x = $\frac{1}{3}$; space group P21/c, a = 1640.49(12), b = 1191.94(9), c = 743.33(6) pm, β = 94.759(4)°, Z = 4, R1 = 0.1184) the undulation of the tetrahedra chain is commensurate, the repetition unit consists of six tetrahedra. In the second new Rb ferrate, Rb7[FeS2]5 (x = 0.4; monoclinic, space group C2/c, K7[FeS2]5-type; a = 2833.9(2), b = 1197.36(9), c = 744.63(6) pm, β = 103.233(4)°, Z = 4, R1 = 0.1474) and its isotypic mixed Rb/Cs-analog Rb3.6Cs3.4[FeS2]5 (a = 2843.57(5), b = 1226.47(2), c = 759.890(10) pm, β = 103.7170(9)°, R1 = 0.0376) the chain buckling leads to a further increased repetition unit of 10 tetrahedra. For all mixed-valent ferrates, the Fe–S bond lengths continuously increase with the amount (x) of Fe(II). The buckling of the chains is controlled through the local coordination of the S atoms by the variable number of A cations of different sizes.

The structures of the 3d divalent transition-metal diarsenates M 2As2O7 (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Zn) can be considered as variants of the monoclinic (C2/m) thortveitite [Sc2Si2O7] structure type with a ≃ 6.7, b ≃ 8.5, c ≃ 4.7 Å, α ≃ 90, β ≃ 102, γ ≃ 90° and Z = 2. Co2As2O7 and Ni2As2O7 are dimorphic. Their high-temperature (β) polymorphs adopt the thortveitite aristotype structure in C2/m, whereas their low-temperature (α) polymorphs are hettotypes and crystallize with larger unit cells in the triclinic crystal system in space groups P\bar 1 and P1, respectively. Mn2As2O7 undergoes no phase transition and likewise adopts the thortveitite structure type in C2/m. Zn2As2O7 has an incommensurately modulated crystal structure [C2/m(α,0,γ)0s] with q = [0.3190 (1), 0, 0.3717 (1)] at ambient conditions and transforms reversibly to a commensurately modulated structure with Z = 12 (I2/c) below 273 K. The Zn phase resembles the structures and phase transitions of Cr2P2O7. Besides descriptions of the low-temperature Co2As2O7, Ni2As2O7 and Zn2As2O7 structures as five-, three- and sixfold superstructures of the thortveitite-type basic structure, the superspace approach can also be applied to descriptions of all the commensurate structures. In addition to the ternary M 2As2O7 phases, the quaternary phase (Ni,Co)2As2O7 was prepared and structurally characterized. In contrast to the previously published crystal structure of the mineral petewilliamsite, which has the same idealized formula and has been described as a 15-fold superstructure of the thortveitite-type basic structure in space group C2, synthetic (Ni,Co)2As2O7 can be considered as a solid solution adopting the α-Ni2As2O7 structure type. Differences of the two structure models for (Ni,Co)2As2O7 are discussed.
