SYNOPSISThere are many reports which suggest that patients with affective illness (mania and/or depression) have abnormalities in the functioning of one or more neurobiological systems. At a conference convened by the Clinical Research Branch, Division of Extramural Research Programs, National Institute of Mental Health, these findings were reviewed and some of the factors impeding movement towards a more complete and integrated view of the functioning of neurobiological systems in patients with mania or depression were identified. As a result, a multi-research centre, collaborative approach to the study of the psychobiology of affective disorders was developed. In this collaborative programme, which has now been underway for several years, the focus has been upon: (a) the assessment of the functioning of several different types of biological systems in the same patient, both before and during treatment; (b) obtaining a reasonably large number of patients and comparison subjects; and (c) the use within and across centres of standardized diagnostic categories and behavioural rating methodologies. In this paper the history, background, and rationale for this collaborative effort are reviewed. Those biological systems chosen for study are noted, and issues such as reliability and validity of diagnoses, measurement of state variables, assessment of change with treatment, and logistical and coordinating problems are discussed.

Although norm-referenced tests have been a mainstay in special education placement and program evaluation activity, there never has been a systematic effort to determine whether handicapped children have been included in the development of the tests' norms, items, and indices of reliability and validity. The present investigation explored this question by analyzing up-to-date user manuals and technical supplements of 27 aptitude and achievement tests. Results indicated most test developers and publishers provide scant data on the appropriateness of their tests for use with handicapped children. Implications for test users, developers, and publishers are discussed.

The current study set out to define ELT and ELL students' attitude towards portfolio assessment in academic writing and to define the positive and negative aspects of portfolio assessment along with the aims to define their preferences on choosing portfolios versus traditional pen-and-paper tests. The sample of this study consists of 49 students studying English Language Teaching (ELT) and English Language and Literature departments at Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University in the second term of academic year 2021-2022. Study was conducted using survey research design; a Likert scale questionnaire and one-on-one interviews in order to collect data on attitudes towards Portfolio Assessment. The results of the final analysis showed that participants are competent about the content of portfolio assessment and the portfolio sharing activities offer learners the chances to learn good English with the help of acquired technics from their classmates. According to participants, self-evaluation, peer-evaluation, active participation and language skills development were considered as advantages of portfolio Requiring much time, reliability and validity issues and neglecting listening and speaking skills were among the disadvantages of portfolio assessment. Moreover, the subject participants of current study mostly prefer to be evaluated by portfolio assessment rather than the traditional paper-pen tests.

Article visualizations:
