A design procedure is presented which focuses upon a dynamic compensator of prespecified structural form. The order and feedback matrices of the compensator are first chosen to achieve stability through pole assignment via plant output feedback. The compensator feedforward matrices are then selected to satisfy various steady state and static or dynamic decoupling constraints. Results are summarized in application to a large scale power plant.

There are multivariable systems which have free motions dominated by a limited number of clearly separable modes. In some cases it is possible to specifically control these modes, thereby improving overall control of the system. This paper is a discussion of when and how modal control may be applied.
