Although those sentenced to life imprisonment have no right to release, a life sentence rarely involves imprisonment for the remainder of a convicted offender's natural life. Life prisoners may hope for early release on the so-called “life-licence”, whereby they remain liable to be recalled to prison for the rest of their lives.

Artikel ini bertujuan memahami dimensi alam kehidupan dan proses pencapaian manunggaling kawula­Gusti menurut Serat Jatimurti. Terpahaminya dimensi alam kehidupan tersebut diharapkan mampu menuntun pelaku mistik kejawen mencapai tujuan mistiknya. Puncak laku mistik orang kejawen adalah manunggaling kawul ­Gusti. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode analisis wacana dan interprestasi. Teori yang dmanfaatkan ialah teori pragmatik. Teori pragmatik diterapkan karena berkait erat dengan manfaat karya sastra bagi pembaca dan masyarakat. Hasil pengkajian ini adalah terungkapnya berbagai dimensi alam kehidupan dan makna manunggaling kawula­ Gusti, yaitu menyatunya gesang sejati atau urip sejati dengan Kang Maha Gesang atau Kang Maha Urip, Tuhan Yang Maha Esa. Abstract: The aim of this article is to comprehend the dimension of natural life and the achievement process of manunggaling kawula Gusti ‘the unity of human soul and God’ according to Serat Jatimurti. It is expected that comprehending the natural life dimensions can lead the performer of mystic of kejawen to get his mystical goal. The ultimate mystical goal of the kejawen people is manunggaling kawula Gusti. The data was analyzed by using discourse analysis and interpretation method. The pragmatic theory was applied because it was closely related with the benefit of the literary works for the reader and the society. This study has found various dimensions of natural life and the meaning of manunggaling kawula Gusti, which is the unity of true gesang or true urip ‘life’ with God, Kang Maha Gesang or Kang Maha Urip ‘the eternal’. The article discusses the main approaches to understanding the designated terms in scientific thought in the second half of the XX - early XXI centuries. Within the framework of modern sociocultural research, on the one hand, national traditions are developing in defining the concepts of "culture" and "civilization", on the other, new connotations are being created. According to the authors of the article, the considered approaches to determining the meanings of the phenomena of culture and civilization are the most significant, revealing the essence of modern society. Culture appears as: an anthropological category, reflecting the creative activity of a person, as an ontological category, suggesting that outside of culture there is no meaningful and meaningful human being; as an axiological category representing a system for storing and transmitting spiritual experience, values and ideals. Civilization acts as a praxeological category that characterizes the level of social and technological development of society, which is characterized by alienation from natural life, the priority of social values over environmental ones, and the transformative-deforming nature of activity.

This chapter argues that the possibility of transformations and transformative experiences shows that strict, long-term punishments are epistemically irrational. Since the rationality of punishment must be sensitive to the mental states of the person being punished, including their mental states after the time of the punishable act, the possibility of radical changes makes it irrational to punish a person in a way that precludes considering future evidence about these changes. Since strict, long-term punishments, such as sentences of natural life without the possibility of parole, do just this, such punishments always run afoul of the demands of epistemic rationality.
