This paper presents results from the first UK national survey of patient information and interventions related to vaginal dilation in pelvic radiotherapy (RT). The aim was to elicit current practice with regard to the target population, content/process of patient education, and the evaluation of compliance in relation to this intervention. A 38-item questionnaire was sent to all RT departments (n = 65) and a convenience sample of specialist gynecological oncology nurses (n = 166), with response rates of 62% (n = 40) and 31% (n = 52), respectively. Data analysis (via SPSS v11) used both descriptive and inferential statistics. Divergence of opinion was evident regarding the specific target audience for dilator education, and only a limited number of elements of vaginal dilator technique achieved consensus. Sixty-seven percent of respondents stated they carried out a wider sexual health assessment associated with the provision of dilator information, although its content varied considerably. Results suggest the provision of vaginal dilation advice may benefit from being placed in the wider context of assessing treatment impact on women's sexual health, raising the profile of appropriate psychosexual assessment, and intervention in clinical oncology practice. Further research could determine the efficacy of vaginal dilation in preventing development of vaginal stenosis among women receiving pelvic RT.

This chapter describes how sexual health has become a touchstone in discussions about political belonging in the United States. By linking the management of the individual body to the governance of the social body, proponents of sexual health projects define healthy societies, responsible conduct, and “good” and “bad” sexual citizens. While the uptake of sexual health by federal health agencies suggests movement toward the centralized administration of the concept, other uses of the term escape the control of any central biomedical or state authority. This essay considers how projects of sexual health, some organized by the state and some the efforts of a politically diverse range of activists, circulate within worlds of politics and governance. It concludes that as proponents of sexual health work to establish the proper relations between bodily conduct and social order, they offer a range of templates for modern biocitizenship.

Background: For aging healthy, the prevention and maintenance of oral health is essential in the general health of the individual. Objective: Thus, we sought to evaluate the elderly's perception of themselves, associating this information with their reported quality of life. Methods: This is an exploratory descriptive study with a quantitative approach. It was held in the Family Health Units in the city of João Pessoa-Paraiba-Brazil, in 2015. The Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index questionnaire was used to assess the Socio Dental Indicator. Results: Were 258 elderly, mostly female, married, who perceive their oral health positively, although they report having suffered limitations, being them physical, psychological, pain or discomfort. Conclusion: In the face of the evidence, measures are suggested to minimize the gaps, adopting more public policies aimed at the health of the elderly. These measures will ensure better conditions of service and development of projects with the aim of providing ageing with quality of life, to this age group. The results of this study may contribute to educational actions aimed at improving the care of the elderly.

Sexual health is the state of well-being regarding one’s sexuality, not just the absence of disease or dysfunction. Sexual health is highly valued by most people and associated with overall health. Assessment of sexual health, including sexual orientation and gender identity, should be integrated into the whole health approach to care. Addressing sexual health will enhance preventive care, promote healthy sexual functioning, and optimize overall health and well-being.Unfortunately, sexual health is not routinely assessed in clinical practice. One of the primary barriers is a gap in communication between patients and providers. Providers cite beliefs that patients will bring up sexual concerns themselves, or that patients might be offended by discussing sexual health. By contrast, patients often report an expectation that providers will bring up sexual health, and be comfortable with sexual health discussions in the clinic setting.Within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the lack of a sexual health template within the electronic health record (EHR) adds an additional technological barrier. The VHA’s transition toward whole health and updates to its EHR will provide unique opportunities to integrate sexual health assessment into routine care. We highlight future system modifications to address this within the VHA.Given the multifaceted barriers to sexual health assessment, it will be vital for healthcare systems integrating a whole health approach to develop both practical and educational interventions to address the communication gap. VHA’s expertise in developing and implementing EHR-based quality improvements and health education interventions may help inform interventions beyond VHA.
