Research methods influence the nature of evidence that is collected, how that evidence is interpreted, styles of theorizing, and modes of reporting. David A. Buchanan and Alan Bryman argue that methods are not neutral. Unconventional methods give us new lenses and perspectives on traditional topics, and open up fresh lines of inquiry. The distinction between conventional and unconventional is blurred, and methodology can be unconventional on a number of dimensions. The roots and consequences of methodological conservatism are explored, and the trend towards ‘polymorphic’ (many forms) research is explored. A survey of journal editors reveals that they and their reviewers are broadly receptive to the use of unconventional methods, as long as they are adequately justified. The main barrier to the adoption of unconventional methods lies with researchers who believe that the use of non-standard approaches will be punished by rejection. The chapter concludes with an outline of the book’s structure.

The debate over corporate governance is skewed by the common misunderstanding that shareholders are the owners of companies, and are entitled to have them run in their interest. The legal model of the firm is more nuanced, seeing the corporation as a complex entity characterized by co-operation between the suppliers of capital and labour, with a co-ordinating role for management. The elevation of shareholder primacy as a focal point for corporate strategy over recent decades is the result of government deferring to financial interests in the making of rules governing takeovers and board structure. Reversing financialization, and the negative impact it is having on social cohesion and innovation, will require a new legislative framework for corporate governance, with a greater role for employee voice and a reorientation of investment priorities.

Two prominently discussed sustainable food alternatives—lab-meat and edible insects—elicit disgust among consumers, thereby preventing acceptance. While providing prospective consumers with more information on, for instance, the environmental benefits of lab-meat has shown some success in increasing consumer acceptance, we argue that the disgust response—the main barrier to the societal acceptance of these foods—is not addressed. This is, we argue, because disgust is not the result of misperceptions (e.g., edible insects carry diseases) and thus unlikely to be overcome by information alone. Building on the latest insights into the social origins of disgust, this manuscript reviews an alternative strategy to foster the broader acceptance of sustainable food alternatives that currently elicit disgust. Specifically, we explain why and how public exposure could be a promising avenue for marketers to reduce consumers’ disgust response and thus increase the acceptance of sustainable food alternatives.

Background:Methotrexate (MTX) is currently a mainstream drug in the treatment of rheumatic diseases. However, the response to MTX is not universal and may be conditioned by a number of factors, among which adherence could be crucial.Objectives:The aim of this study is to explore adherence to MTX in patients with rheumatic diseases, facilitators and perceived when taking and maintaining the prescription.Methods:A qualitative study of content analysis was performed. Focus groups with patients taking either oral or subcutaneous MTX (being the main or coadjuvant treatment) for any rheumatic disease was performed. The groups were moderated by a rheumatologist that was unknown for the patients. The speech was recorded and transcribed. Subsequently, an inductive coding was performed with the help of Atlas.ti and main themes and sub-themes were extracted, with examples of verbatim anonymized speech.Results:Three focus groups were conducted, with a total of 12 participants, of whom eight were women, seven had rheumatoid arthritis, three had psoriatic arthritis, one had spondyloarthritis, and one had systemic lupus erythematosus. All patients reported an adequate adherence to treatment. The barriers identified were: information in the leaflet, technical language in the consults, difficult access to doctor´s appointment, social environment, side effects and the subcutaneous device. As facilitators, the following aspects were discussed: good predisposition of the physician, reliable graphic information, role of associations and partners support.The unmet needs detected were: problems with travelling, protocols for eventualities, absence of a plan of care, neglection of “non-physical” symptoms, disinformation on side effects and training in complementary aspects.Conclusion:Getting reliable information was the main barrier identified. The environment and side effects may also negatively impact on adherence.
