AbstractIn Papua New Guinea, Trichinella papuae, a non-encapsulated species, is circulating among wild and domestic pigs and saltwater crocodiles. Since an important phase of the life cycle of nematodes of the genus Trichinella is the time of survival of infective larvae in decaying muscle tissues of the hosts, the carcass of a pig, experimentally infected with larvae of T. papuae, was exposed to the environmental conditions of Papua New Guinea to establish how long these larvae would survive and remain infective to a new host. Larvae retained their infectivity in the pig carcass up to 9 days after slaughtering, during which time the temperature within the carcass reached 35.0°C on 2 days; the average relative humidity was 79.0%. A low number of larvae survived up to day 14 after the pig was killed, when the carcass temperature reached 38.0°C, but they lost their infectivity to laboratory mice. This result suggests that the larvae of T. papuae can survive in a tropical environment for a time, favouring their transmission to a new host in spite of the lack of a collagen capsule.

From a survey of helminths of the alimentary tracts of 26 hydromyins; 11 Leptomys, 1 Mayermys, 3 Neohydromys, 9 Paraleptomys, and 2 Parahydromys from Papua New Guinea an acanthocephalan, Porrorchis hydromuris; a cestode, Mathevotaenia sp.; the trematodes, Brachylaima sp., and a psilostome; and the nematodes, Heterakis fieldingi, Odilia mackerrasae, O, emanuelae, Protospirura kaindiensis, Rictularia mackerrasae, and Capillaria sp. s.l., as well as encapsulated larval ascaridids were found. All represent new host records. Labiobulura leptomyidis n. sp. (Subuluridae), differs from its congener in having longer spicules, no spines on the chordal lobes of the buccal cavity and it is described from Leptomys spp. Spirurida or Ascaridida were the dominant taxa in each helminth assemblage, with dietary preferences being a determinant. Either coevolution and or host switching, sometimes associated with migration between Australia and Papua New Guinea, also appear to have influenced the development of the helminth assemblage in each host taxon.

It is well known that the first two larval stages in the life cycle of nematodes belonging to the superfamily Strongloidea, have a freeliving existence. During this time, the larva which hatches from the egg feeds actively, undergoes two moults and grows considerably before reaching the infective stage, when it is ready to invade a definitive host. Under natural conditions this external development takes place in the faeces, which have been deposited by the infected host on ground likely to be contaminated with various bacteria.

The key includes eight genera known to occur in Australia and Papua New Guinea. These are Ctenarytaina Ferris & Klyver (type genus), Syncarpiolyma Froggatt, Eriopsylla Froggatt, Blastopsylla Taylor, Anoeconeossa Taylor, Leptospermonastes Taylor, and two new genera, Agelaeopsylla and Cryptoneossa. Keys to the species in Agelaeopsylh, Cryptoneossa and Leptospermonastes are given. Agelaeopsylla contains five new species, A. dividua (type species), A. maculatae, A. corymbiae, A. papuanae (which also occurs in Papua New Guinea), and A. insolita. They feed mainly on Angophora and two 'subgenera' of Eucalyptus (Corymbia and Blakella). The hosts of Cryptoneossa, which contains five new species, C. vulgaris (type species), C. occidentalis, C. triangula, C. minuta, and C. leptospermi, are mainly in the 'subgenera' Monocalyptus and Corymbia of Eucalyptus; some are found on Symphyomyrtus and smaller subgenera, one on Angophora, and one on Leptospermum. Two new species of Leptospermonastes are described; L. maculosipennis and L. fasciata were both collected from Melaleuca spp., a new host for this genus. Eriopsylla and its type species, E. viridis, are redescribed, with one new species, E. malleensis.

The prionine genus Xixuthrus consists of species among the largest cerambycids in the world, attaining sizes more than 150 mm. The genus occurs in the Australo–Indo–Pacific regions with 18 species, six of which are found in New Guinea (Xixuthrus arfakianus, granulipennis, helleri, lameerei, microcerus axis, thomsoni). Their habitat is limited to primeval rainforests, and in many areas, it is under threat because of logging and human deforestation. The life cycle of these beetles is unknown, and they remain elusive and mysterious because of the limited accessibility to specimens living in dense rainforest of middle–high volcanic regions with inaccessible steep slopes affected by high humidity, fog, and heavy rainfall. The new subspecies described here was collected in the centre of Papua New Guinea, where many beetles are to date undescribed.

The genus Cancricepon Giard & Bonnier, 1887 is recorded for the first time from Australia, the Maldives, Papua New Guinea and Taiwan. Four species of Cancricepon are reported here, and two are new to science. Cancricepon choprae (Nierstrasz & Brender à Brandis, 1925) is reported from the Gulf of Mexico on the Florida coast, infesting a new host, Micropanope cf. sculptipes Stimpson, 1871. Cancricepon castroi n. sp. is described from Australia, the Maldives, Japan and Papua New Guinea parasitizing coral crabs of the family Trapeziidae. Cancricepon cf. multituberosum An, Yu & Williams, 2012 is recorded from a specimen of Leptodius affinis (De Haan, 1835) from Taiwan. Specimens previously misidentified as C. choprae parasitizing Scalopidia spinosipes Stimpson, 1858, from China are described as C. beibusinus n. sp. All known hosts and localities of species of Cancricepon are summarized, and a key to the species in the genus is provided. The similarities between species of Cancricepon and the type species of Trapezicepon Bonnier, 1900, are discussed and Trapezicepon thalamitae Markham, 1985, is transferred to Scyracepon Tattersall, 1905.

Abstract New host plant records are presented for the following fruit species from Papua New Guinea, Indonesian Papua (West Papua, Central Papua, Papua), associated islands and Bougainville: Bactrocera neocheesmanae, B. bancroftii, B. contermina, B. frauenfeldi, B. musae, B. speculifera, B. trivialis and Dacus axanus.
