Permian Brachiopods from Khios Island, Greece

Fourteen species of brachiopods were collected from two measured sections on Khios, and although the sections are only about 4 km apart, they contain but one genus in common. Both collections are from the zone of Neoschwagerina, but the collection from the hill called Seladha is probably somewhat younger than the collection from the region called Agrelias, because it is accompanied by the first appearance of the fusulinid Verbeekina. The brachiopods at Agrelias are: Kotlaia aethopa n. gen. and sp., Schuchertella tapina n. sp., Derbyia dirata n. sp., Meekella megala n. sp., Seseloidia phlebodes n. gen. and sp., Tschernyschewia sp. indet., Marginifera ganota n. sp., Entacanthadus chioticus n. gen. and sp., Horridonia sp. A., and Linoproductus cf. L. lineatus Waagen. The fauna at Seladha contains: Linoproductus cf. L. lineatus, Composita sp. indet., Squamularia sp. indet., Hustedia sp. indet., and Timorina sp. indet. Both faunas are dated as middle Permian, Kungurian, perhaps equivalent to the lower and upper parts of the Wordian of North America. The type species of Kotlaia is K. capillosa n. sp. from the Permian of the Salt Range, Pakistan, and a new genus of hercosiid (Sicularia) from the Permian of Sicily is introduced for nomenclatural reasons, with type species Richthofenia sicula Gemmellaro.

Concepts of the family Hyolithidae Nicholson fide Fisher and the genera Hyolithes Eichwald and Orthotheca Novak have been expanded through time to encompass a variety of morphologically dissimilar shells. The Hyolithidae is here considered to include only those hyolithid species which have a rounded (convex) dorsum; slopes on the dorsum are inflated, and the venter may be flat or slightly inflated. Hyolithes encompasses species which possess a low dorsum and a prominent longitudinal sulcus along each edge of the dorsum; the ligula is short and the apertural rim is flared. The emended concept of Orthotheca includes only those species of orthothecid hyoliths which have a subtriangular transverse outline and longitudinal lirae covering the shell on both dorsum and venter.Eighteen species of Hyolithes and one species of Orthotheca from the Appalachian region and Western Interior were reexamined in light of more modern taxonomic concepts and standards of quality for type material. Reexamination of type specimens of H. similis Walcott from the Lower Cambrian of Newfoundland, H. whitei Resser from the Lower Cambrian of Nevada, H. billingsi Walcott from the Lower Cambrian of Nevada, H. gallatinensis Resser from the Upper Cambrian of Wyoming, and H. partitus Resser from the Middle Cambrian of Alabama indicates that none of these species represents Hyolithes. Hyolithes similis is here included under the new genus Similotheca, in the new family Similothecidae. Hyolithes whitei is designated as the type species of the new genus Nevadotheca, to which H. billingsi may also belong. Hyolithes gallatinensis is referred to Burithes Missarzhevsky with question, and H. partitus may represent Joachimilites Marek. The type or types of H. attenuatus Walcott, H. cecrops Walcott, H. comptus Howell, H. cowanensis Resser, H. curticei Resser, H. idahoensis Resser, H. prolixus Resser, H. resseri Howell, H. shaleri Walcott, H. terranovicus Walcott, and H. wanneri Resser and Howell lack shells and/or other taxonomically important features such as a complete aperture, rendering the diagnoses of these species incomplete. Their names should only be used for the type specimens until better preserved topotypes become available for study. Morphology of the types of H.? corrugatus Walcott and “Orthotheca” sola Resser does not support placement in the Hyolitha; the affinities of these species are uncertain.

Abstract. The genus Praecypridea gen. nov. (Cypridoidea, Family Cyprideidae Martin, 1940) is described and thus far comprises four species: the type species Praecypridea acuticyatha (Schudack, 1998) comb. nov., Praecypridea postelongata (Oertli, 1957) comb. nov., Praecypridea suprajurassica (Mojon, Haddoumi & Charriére, 2009) comb. nov. and Praecypridea acuta (Moos, 1959 in Wicher, 1959) comb. nov. Representatives of the new genus have been described from the Middle to Late Jurassic of Europe, North America and Africa and the Early Cretaceous of South America, with other presumed representatives also occurring in the Early Cretaceous. Species of Praecypridea are considered to represent members of the ancestral lineage of the extinct genus Cypridea Bosquet, representatives of which flourished in non-marine habitats of latest Jurassic to Early Cretaceous age and account for the first period of abundance of the non-marine Cypridoidea.

AbstractA new genus of Gonianotini, Spinigernotus, is described with Sphragisticus simulatus Barber 1918 as type-species. S. simulatus, known only from New Mexico, is reported from Mexico. The new genus Cordillonotus, and type-species C. stellatus, are described from British Columbia, California, Oregon, and Washington. Cordillonotus is tentatively placed in the tribe Rhyparochromini.

The genus Plicoplasia Boucot, 1959 (type species P. cooperi Boucot, 1959), embraces certain Lower Devonian brachiopods of the subfamily Ambocoeliinae, family Ambocoeliidae. The geographic range of Plicoplasia includes North America (Eastern Americas Realm) and South America and South Africa (Malvinokaffric Realm).

Two species of anophthalmous, unpigmentedasellids have been found in springs and groundwaters of S.E. Siberia (Primorye region). Asellus (Asellus) primoryensis n. sp. is closelyrelated to the epigean species A. (A.) hilgendorfii Bovallius, 1886, as is the case for all stygobiont Asellus (Asellus) species previously known from the Japanese archipelago. Sibirasellus parpurae n. g., n. sp. is closely related to the microphthalmous species Asellus dentifer Birstein & Levanidov, 1952 from the Ussuri Basin (Khor region), now type-species of the new genus Sibirasellus. These two species show several original characters: body covered by numerous cuticular squamulae, mandibular palp reduced (glabrous and 2-segmented), and coxopodites of pereopods reduced and coalescent with their sternites, pointing to certain affinities with the stygobiont Japanese genus Nipponasellus Matsumoto, 1962 and probably to the epigean species of the “latifrons” group of the genus Asellus, presently restricted to arctic Siberia and western Alaska. The different asellid lines living in the Far East and Pacific North America are much more related with each other than with all other lines of the family.All these forms possess a copulatory system built on the “Asellus pattern”: Endopodite of 2nd male pleopod with a spur-shaped basal apophysis or “processus calcariformis”, an afferent spermaticopening with a labial spur or “processus cylindriformis”, and 2nd exopodite segment with a tergal or “catch lobe”. This phyletic system includes the genus Asellus Geoffroy, 1762 (the present status of which is discussed herein), its subgenera Asellus Dudich, 1925, Mesoasellus Birstein, 1951, and Phreatoasellus Matsumoto, 1962, and its related genera Calasellus Bowman, 1981, Nipponasellus Matsumoto, 1962, Uenasellus Matsumoto, 1962, and Sibirasellus n. g.

Baiotomeus is a new genus of ptilodontid multituberculate from the late Torrejonian Land-Mammal Age (late middle Paleocene) of western North America. Baiotomeus douglassi (Simpson), the type species, has been assigned, at one time or another, to Ptilodus, Mimetodon, and Neoplagiaulax. In addition, a second, new species, B. lamberti, from three localities in the Medicine Rocks area of southeastern Montana is reported here. The Medicine Rocks localities are tentatively assigned a latest Torrejonian age, younger than localities yielding B. douglassi and younger than previously suggested on the basis of plesiadapid primates.Multituberculates appear to have attained their highest species richness during the Torrejonian Land-Mammal Age, but the discovery of B. lamberti illustrates that our knowledge of multituberculate diversity is incomplete from even that interval of time.

A new genus, Euryburnia gen. nov. (type species: Megamelus magnifrons Crawford, 1914) is erected to accommodate the group of Nearctic species of the family Delphacidae erroneously placed by Hamilton (2002) in the genus Eurybregma Scott, 1875. The new genus differs from Eurybregma by narrower metope without intermediate carinae on eumetope (only median carina is developed). According to male genitalia structure the new genus is close to the genera Unkanodes Fennah, 1956 and Chilodelphax Vilbaste, 1968, but distinguished by angular (not rounded) latero-ventral lobes of pygofer and by pygofer phragme without teeth and processes. From the genus Eurybregma the new genus differs by the presence of latero-ventral lobes of male pygofer. According to presence of unique, well developed beak-shaped basal lobes of dorso-lateral plates of ovipositor (first valvifers) the new genus is distinguished within all Delphacidae. New combinations proposed: Euryburnia magnifrons (Crawford, 1914), comb. nov. (=Megamelus magnifrons Crowford, 1914), Euryburnia montana (Beamer, 1952), comb. nov., (=Eurysa montana Beamer, 1952), Euryburnia obesa (Beamer, 1952), comb. nov. (=Eurysaobesa Beamer, 1952), Euryburnia eurytion (Hamilton, 2002), comb. nov. (=Eurybregma eurytion Hamilton, 2002).

AbstractPlatygymnopa new genus, type species P. helicis new species, is described from the northern United States and southern Canada, with type locality McHenry Co., North Dakota. In Montana, P. helicis was reared from larvae feeding within dead snails (Physidae, Aplexa hypnorum (L.)).

Anactolasma yukonanum new genus and species is described from the Pragian of Yukon Territory and is assigned to the Anactolasmatinae, a new subfamily of the Mucophyllidae Hill. Adult stages of Anactolasma resemble gerontic stages of Kobeha Merriam, although the genera have distinct ontogenies. Kobeha is revised on the basis of new material of its type species K. walcotti Merriam. The Papiliophyllinae Stumm are promoted to family status. Kobeha ketophylloides Merriam, from the Pragian of Nevada, and Endophyllum banksi Jell and Hill, from the Pragian of Tasmania, are restudied using new topotypic and other material. A new endophyllid genus named Murphyphyllum is erected for them, with E. banksi as type species. Asarcophyllum ramosum new genus and species, from the Emsian of Nevada, is made type species of a new cyathophyllid genus. Spongophyllum nevadense Stumm and S. expansum Stumm, both also from the Emsian of Nevada, are placed in the new genus, as is Asarcophyllum corona new genus and species, from the Emsian of Yukon Territory. Biostratigraphic settings, with emphasis on associated corals, brachiopods and conodonts, are given for the new and revised genera and species.

Abstract. A new genus, Palaeatalasis gen. nov. (type species P. monrosi sp. nov.), from the tribe Megamerini (Chrysomelidae: Sagrinae) from the early-middle Eocene Green River Formation is described and illustrated. The new genus is similar to the Recent Atalasis Lacordaire, 1845 but differs from it in the subparallel sides of the pronotum, metafemora without teeth, and non-emarginate eyes. It differs from the Eocene Eosagra Haupt, 1950 in the large, convex, non-emarginate eyes, wide elytra, and transverse pronotum. The new genus is distinguished from the Paleocene Gallopsis Legalov, Kirejtshuk et Nel, 2019 in the wide forehead and convex eyes. It is the first record of the Sagrinae from North America and the fourth known species of the family Chrysomelidae from the Green River.
