Lecidea hercynica, a new montane epiphytic lichen from Germany

Lecidea hercynica Hauck & Schmull is described as a new species from Germany. It is characterized by a poorly developed or bullate to verrucose, areolate thallus on whitened spots of the substratum, numerous plane to yellowish brown to black, convex apothecia with a persistent margin, Micarea type-like asci, and by the presence of atranorin and protocetraric acid. It does not belong to Lecidea s. str., but is provisionally placed in Lecidea s. lat. until a taxonomic treatment of the whole group has been carried out. Lecidea hercynica is widespread in high-elevation forests of Picea abies in the Harz Mountains, where it grows preferably on decorticated wood in open situations.

Dr. W. Thalenhorst, of the Niedersächsische Forstliche Versuchsanstalt, Göttingen, Germany, sent me some time ago specimens of what he took to be an abnormally dark form of Pachynematus montanus (Zaddach). These had been reared in 1952 from larvae, not at the time distinguished from the larvae of that species and found feeding with them on spruce (Picea abies) in the Harz Mountains in the previous year. Unfortunately the female was smashed in the post and I did not like to describe a new species that would have to be based on only a few males, though I was not able to identify them with any known species. In 1955, however, he reared another female of the same species and from this he tried to obtain eggs but without any success. This female I now have before me. No further specimens have been found.

AbstractTwenty-three species of epiphytic Caloplaca are recognized in India, of which Caloplaca himalayana Joshi, Y. & Upreti, characterized by thin, continuous, yellowish thallus, numerous ferruginous-red to brownish red, flat to subconvex apothecia with a persistent proper margin and lignicolous habitat, is described here as a new species. Because of the ferruginous coloured apothecial disc, the new species is provisionally placed in the ferruginea group until a taxonomic treatment of the whole group has been carried out. The ferruginea group is characterized by a whitish to grey (rarely yellowish) crustose thallus, a ferruginous to rarely blackish apothecial disc, biatorine to lecanorine exciple, thick-walled spore septa and the chemosyndrome C. The taxonomic affinities of the new taxa with several other taxa, including species of ferruginea group, are discussed. Two new records for India are also recorded: Caloplaca alnetorum Giralt, Nimis & Poelt and C. crocea (Kremp.) Hafellner & Poelt. A key to all the corticolous Caloplaca species occurring in the Indian subcontinent is also provided.

Ongoing research on the systematics of Drymonia (Gesneriaceae) resulted in the discovery of a new species, Drymonia mexicana Clavijo & J.L. Clark of the Gesneriaceae (tribe: Gesnerieae, subtribe: Columneinae). The new species is distinguished by the combination of narrow leaves with large corollas, glabrous leaves adaxially, calyx lobes ovate, and campanulate flowers with the tube slightly recurved ventrally and the limb purple. The new species is endemic to high elevation forests in the the Mexican state of Veracruz. The plant is commonly cultivated, but its introduction from Mexico to the horticultural community is unknown. Here, we describe and illustrate Drymonia mexicana Clavijo & J.L. Clark and present a key to identify the species of Drymonia native to Mexico.

We describe a new species ofPsychrophrynellafrom the humid montane forest of the Department Cusco in Peru. Specimens were collected at 2,670–3,165 m elevation in the Área de Conservación Privada Ukumari Llakta, Japumayo valley, near Comunidad Campesina de Japu, in the province of Paucartambo. The new species is readily distinguished from all other species ofPsychrophrynellabutP. bagrecitoandP. usurpatorby possessing a tubercle on the inner edge of the tarsus, and from these two species by its yellow ventral coloration on abdomen and limbs. Furthermore, the new species is likeP. bagrecitoandP. usurpatorin having an advertisement call composed of multiple notes, whereas other species ofPsychrophrynellawhose calls are known have a pulsed call (P. teqta) or a short, tonal call composed of a single note. The new species has a snout-vent length of 16.1–24.1 mm in males and 23.3–27.7 mm in females. Like other recently described species in the genus, this newPsychrophrynellainhabits high-elevation forests in the tropical Andes and likely has a restricted geographic distribution.

<i>Hypoxylon terricola</i> Milter, known from a single collection in Michigan in USA and three sites in Southern France, has been found in Poland; isolated from the soil under <i>Dactylis glomerata</i> L. culture and from the dishwater of the roots of <i>D. glomerata</i> L. groving in the vicinity of the spruce (<i>Picea abies</i>) (L.) K a r s t mountainers forest.

High-throughput sequencing, when combined with taxonomic expertise, is a powerful tool to refine and advance taxonomic classification, including at the species level. In the present work, a new species, Plantago campestris, is described out of the P. commersoniana species complex, based on phylogenomic and morphological evidence. The main morphological characters that distinguish the new species from P. commersoniana are the glabrous posterior sepals and the slightly broader leaves. The new species is known from only three localities, all in natural high-elevation grasslands in Paraná and Santa Catarina states, southern Brazil. According to the IUCN criteria new species should be assessed as Endangered (EN). We present field photographs of P. campestris and related species, and we provide an identification key to the species previously included within the circumscription of P. commersoniana.

We describe a new species of glassfrog from the cloud forest of Manu National Park, southern Peru, at elevations of 2750–2800m. The new species is similar in morphology to Centrolene lemniscatum, which occurs in northern Peru at elevations of2000–2280 m. Both species have white labial stripes, humeral spines, and lack vomerine teeth. The new species differs from C.lemniscatum by its larger size, labial stripe extending into a distinct lateral stripe instead of a discontinuous lateral stripe, snoutprofile inclined anteroventrally instead of bluntly rounded, greater depression in the internarial area, and by having stronglyprotruding nostrils. Males of the new species emit long calls with 8–14 peaked notes, instead of a short tonal note in C. lemnis-catum. Another morphologically similar species, C. buckleyi, has a short advertisement call composed of 1–5 notes, and isgenetically distinct from the new species. This new Centrolene extends the known distribution of Centrolene to the south by 600 km, and is the southernmost species of this genus.

We describe a new species of phytotelm-breeding rhacophorid frog from central Vietnam. Gracixalus trieng sp. nov. is distinguished from all congeners by a combination of (1) body size medium (37.2–41.4 mm in five adult males), (2) snout rounded in dorsal and lateral views, (3) dorsal surface brown or yellowish with a darker brown interorbital crossbar and inverse-Y shape on the back, (4) throat and chest yellow or yellowish brown with pinkish mottling and belly and ventral surfaces of limbs including hands and feet pinkish, (5) tympanum and supratympanic fold distinct, (6) iris pale gold with darker gold radiating out from anterior and posterior edges of pupil, (7) majority of dorsal body and limb surfaces smooth in adults, with some individuals having sparsely distributed low, irregular tubercles, (8) nuptial pads on fingers I and II in adult males, and (9) eggs deposited as a tightly spaced array of non-pendent eggs on the wall of a phytotelmon. The species occurs in syntopy with G. lumarius. At present, Gracixalus trieng sp. nov. is known only from montane bamboo and evergreen forest (>1700 m) on Mount Ngoc Linh and adjacent peaks; and it is likely to be restricted to high-elevation forest with an estimated geographical distribution of <1000 km2.

Naucleopsis tubulata (Moraceae), a new species endemic to the Brazilian Amazon is described and illustrated in this paper. The conical to tubular shape of the perianth of the pistillate flower and fruit, the narrowly oblong shape of the leaves, and the filaments connate at the base differ from other species in the genus. This new species shows morphological similarities with N. caloneura and N. insculptula. The latter, previously treated as a synonym of N. caloneura, is re-established in this paper. We here present a taxonomic treatment for the new species of Naucleopsis, reestablished N. insculptula, and an updated identification key for the Naucleopsis species that occur in the Boreal Brazilian Domain.
