Laeonereis watsoni (Annelida, Nereididae), a new species from western Mexico

A new species of Laeonereis from a shrimp farm associated with a subtropical coastal lagoon on the Mexican Pacific coast is described. The new species is characterized by a deep anterior groove on the prostomium, which is shared only with L. culveri. However, longer tentacular cirri extending back to the anterior margin of chaetiger two, the number of papillae of each group on the maxillary ring of the pharynx, and the relative size of the homogomph falcigers in the new species, allow us to separate the two species. Although the species has not been previously detected in the coastal lagoon surrounding the shrimp farm, we postulate that L. watsoni n. sp. is likely to be part of the invertebrate communities of the upper parts of similar coastal lagoons that are common along the tropical coasts of Mexico.

It is the sixth species of this genus reported for the East Pacific.Epimeria morroneisp. nov. is morphologically similar toE. norfanziLörz, 2011 (New Zealand, 1268 m depth) andE. coraJ.L. Barnard, 1971 (off Oregon, USA, 2086 m depth).Epimeria morroneisp. nov., however, differs from these two species by a combination of several characters, including: vestigial eyes; multidentate mandibular lacinia mobilis; a distinct setae arrangement in palm and dactylus of gnathopods 1–2; the shape and relative size of coxae 1–5; and the shape of the telson.

A new species ofMunidopsisWhiteaves, 1784 is described from the SW Gulf of California, western Mexico. The new species differs from all other known species ofMunidopsisof the East Pacific by the presence of numerous antero-posteriorly compressed processes on the carapace, many of which are truncate and with crenulated anterior margin, by its oval-shaped carapace, wider in its posterior half, and by the short, subrectangular, narrow rostrum with an upturned distal portion. It also differs from the East Pacific species and other species ofMunidopsisby the densely pitted carapace and appendages.

A new species of Glyphocrangon has been collected during deep-water sampling off western Mexico, in the east Pacific. The series of specimens, including both males and females, was found between 780 and 1879 m depth. Glyphocrangon sp. nov. is close to G. sicaria Faxon, 1893 and G. vicaria Faxon, 1896, both occurring in the east Pacific. It differs from both species, however, by the absence of tubercles between the lateral carinae, the presence of a large tooth at the anterior end of the second anterior lateral carina, the size of the eye (proportionally smaller in G. vicaria), and the presence of two large rostral lateral teeth (one obsolete in G. sicaria). The new species is, however, strikingly similar to G. fimbriata Komai & Takeuchi, 1994, from the Mid-Pacific Mountains. It differs from the later species by the shape of the male endopod of first pleopod, the relative size and spination of the appendices interna and masculina, the presence of a large lateral tooth on pleura of abdominal somites 3–5, and the absence of curved setae on distal part of the dactyl of pereiopods 3–5.

The purpose of this note is to describe a new species of the hydrozoan Eudendrium found during an ecological study at the coastal lagoon Bahía de Chengue, near the city of Santa Marta, Colombia (Alvarez-Leon et al., 1995). Colonies of 6–16 cm height were collected between September 1982 and March 1983, up to 0.6 m deep. As of February 2016, this species was still present in the region. They grow on stilt roots of the red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle, in the lagoon channel, and near the opening of Cienaga Grande de Santa Marta estuary. This species is similar to the more common Caribbean Eudendrium carneum Clarke, 1882, but differs in the morphology of female and male gonophores. Voucher material is deposited in the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt, Germany (SMF) and in the Makuriwa-Museo de Historia Natural Marina de Colombia at Instituito de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras—INVEMAR, Santa Marta (INV-CNI).

A new species of caprellid, Deutella mazatlanensis n. sp., is described from Mazatlán Bay, (east Pacific México). Deutella mazatlanensis was found associated with bryozoans, hydroids and sponges in shallow waters. The new species can be differentiated from the remaining species of the genus mainly by the dorsal, anteriorly directed projection on the head; the two dorsal projections and a lateral acute projection anteroventrally projected on pereonite 2 and gnathopod 2 in males. The presence of this species on the Mexican Pacific coast, constitutes the fourth report of Deutella genus for the Pacific Ocean and the first record from the tropical Eastern Pacific.

The family Chrysopetalidae has been poorly studied from the Pacific coast of Mexico compared to other families. Specifically from the southern Mexican Pacific, only two species of the family have been recorded in previous studies, Chrysopetalum occidentale and Paleanotus chrysolepis. In this study 311 specimens were revised, and nine species, belonging to six genera were found. Eight of these species are new records from the southern Mexican Pacific coast: Arichlidon watsonae n. sp., Bhawania cf. goodei, Chrysopetalum elegantoides, C. maculata, Hyalopale sp., Paleaequor psamathe, Paleanotus bellis and P. purpurea. A new species is also described, Arichlidon watsonae n. sp., which is characterized by the curved tips blades of the falcigers and their small and ovoid palps. Additionally, the genera Arichlidon and Hyalopale are recorded by first time from the Tropical Eastern Pacific.

Haliclona (Haliclona) sonorensis sp. nov. (Haplosclerida, Chalinidae) is described from different shallow water localities from the Mar de Cortés (Mexican Pacific coast). The new species is characterized by its thickly incrusting form, scarce and slightly elevated oscules, and pinkish violet color in life, in conjunction with internal characteristics such as an ectosomal skeleton formed by tangential isotropic unispicular reticulation and a regular choanosomal skeleton of unipaucispicular primary lines interconnected by unispicular secondary lines. Spicules are short and robust oxeas. Both the choanosomal skeleton and typical oxeas morphology are characteristic of the subgenus Haliclona. The new species has always been found growing in a mutualistic relationship with the sponge Geodia media Bowerbank, 1873.

Microglanis carlae, new species, is described from the río Paraguay basin and distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: paired and anal fins mottled or with thin faint bands, trunk with dark-brown saddles, anterior margin of pectoral spine with serrations retrorse proximally and antrorse distally, tip of pectoral spine as a distinct bony point, continuous portion of lateral line reaching vertical through last dorsal-fin ray, caudal peduncle with irregularly shaped, faint to dark blotch, maxillary barbel surpassing vertical through dorsal-spine origin, and dark bar on posterior flank continuous from base of adipose fin to that of anal fin. The new species is included in the Microglanis parahybae species complex on the basis of color pattern.
