Trematodes (flukes or digeneans) are by far the most abundant group of parasitic flatworms (Neodermata), and their importance for human and animal health is indisputable. In addition, they exhibit a variety of unique adaptations to parasitism and, probably most remarkably, possess extraordinarily complicated life-cycles. Classification of trematodes represents a very difficult task due to the huge number of existing species and variety of morphological forms, sites of infection within invertebrate and vertebrate hosts and ability to infect a wide spectrum of animals. Therefore, identification of any trematode may represent a problem even for an experienced specialist. This is the reason why I appreciated so much the publication of the first volume of the Keys to the Trematoda in 2002.

Abstract As vectors of malaria, dengue, zika, and yellow fever, mosquitoes are considered one of the more severe worldwide health hazards. Widespread surveillance of mosquitoes is essential for understanding their complex ecology and behaviour, and also for predicting and formulating effective control strategies against mosquito-borne diseases. One technique involves using bioacoustics to automatically identify different species from their wing-beat sounds during flight. In this dataset, we collect sounds of three species of mosquitoes: Aedes Aegypti, Culex Quinquefasciatus & Pipiens, and Culiseta. These species were collected and reproduced in the laboratory of the Natural History Museum of Funchal, in Portugal, by entomologists trained to recognize and classify mosquitoes. For collecting the samples, we used a microcontroller and a mobile phone. The dataset presents audio samples collected with different sampling rates, where 34 audio features characterize each sound file, making it is possible to observe how mosquito populations vary heterogeneously. This dataset provides the basis for feature extraction and classification of flapping-wing flight sounds that could be used to identify different species.

The Geometridae is one of the most species-rich families of Lepidoptera. This book is the first comprehensive catalogue of the 35 000 names of these insects. The primary purpose of the work is to provide a substantial body of taxonomic information, much of it previously unpublished, on the available names of the Geometridae. The catalogue is based on the most complete world classification of the geometrids, the card index to genera and species in The Natural History Museum, London. The two volumes include information on type specimens, type localities and, where possible, larval foodplants. A CD-ROM listing all species referred to in the two text volumes is included with the package and will be of great value to verify valid names and to check spelling.


The fish known as Stylophorus chordatus was first described in 1791 by Shaw from a specimen taken swimming at the surface between the islands of Cuba and Martinique. The generic name was given on account of the structure of the eyes, which were said to be placed on columns, and the specific name had reference to the caudal filament, which was twenty-two inches long, although the fish itself, without the filament, measured only ten inches. For more than a hundred years this was the only example known. It was preserved in the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons, where it was examined by several ichthyologists, including Günther, who placed Stylophorus in the Trachypteridae (Cat. Fish, iii, p. 306,1861). In 1887 the specimen was transferred to the Natural History Museum; at some time or other it had been hacked about by an enthusiastic anatomist, so that in 1907, in a memoir on the anatomy and classification of the Allotriognathi, I wrote, “The remarkable Stylophorus has usually been placed with or near the Trachypteridae. The single known specimen is not in good enough condition for me to offer any suggestion as to its relationships.”

ABSTRACT: In spite of his many other interests, Edward Heron-Allen also worked for nearly 50 years as a scientist on minute shelled protists, called foraminifera, much of it in an unpaid, unofficial capacity at The Natural History Museum, London, and notably in collaboration with Arthur Earland. During this career he published more than 70 papers and obtained several fellowships, culminating in 1919 in his election to the Royal Society. Subsequently, he bequeathed his foraminiferal collections and fine library to the Museum, and both are housed today in a room named in his honour. In this paper, for the first time, an assessment of his scientific accomplishments is given, together with a full annotated bibliography of his publications held in the Heron-Allen Library. This is part of a project to produce a bibliography of his complete publications, recently initiated by the Heron-Allen Society.

Robert Brown is best known for his Australian botanical work of 1801-1805 and for his activity as an early taxonomist and microscopist. However, he made botanical collections and observations on the Atlantic island of Madeira in August 1801 while on his way to Australia on Investigator. As the bicentenary of the voyage is now being celebrated this aspect of Brown's botanical career, and its aftermath, is examined. Some of his Madeiran collection –rass specimens – survive today in the Herbarium of the Natural History Museum, London (BM).
