Images with subarcsec spatial resolution in the light of near-infrared atomic (Bry) and molecular hydrogen H2 (S(1) v=1-0) emission lines were obtained for some extended, pointlike objects in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) for the first time. We used the Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik (MPE) near-infrared array spectrometer FAST (image scale 0.8”/pix, spectral resolving power 950) at the ESO/MPI 2.2m telescope, La Silla. We present some results on the 30-Dor complex and N159A5.

In this short review we describe recent new observations of millimetre transitions of molecules in selected regions of the Magellanic Clouds. The observations were made using the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope, SEST, (Booth et al. 1989), the relatively high resolution of which facilitates, for the first time, observations of individual giant molecular clouds in the Magellanic Clouds. We have mapped the distribution of the emission from the two lowest rotational transitions of 12CO and 13CO and hence have derived excitation conditions for the molecule. In addition, we have observed several well-known interstellar molecules in the same regions, thus doubling the number of known molecules in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The fact that all the observations have been made under controlled conditions with the same telescope enables a reasonable intercomparison of the molecular column densities. In particular, we are able to observe the relative abundances among the different isotopically substituted species of CO.

Near infrared (2 micron) emission lines from molecular hydrogen provide a powerful probe of the morphology and energetics of outflows associated with stellar birth. The H2 emission regions trace the location of shock waves formed when the high velocity outflow from young stars encounters dense quiescent gas. Since H2 is the dominant coolant of the hot post-shock molecular gas, the H2 lines provide a measure of the fraction of the total mechanical luminosity radiated away from the cloud.

AbstractWe discuss the 3D morphology, ionization structure, and kinematics of NGC 2392, the “Eskimo,” based on new and archival HST imagery and new long-slit echelle spectroscopy. High spatial resolution ionization maps of the nebula were made from HST WFPC2 imagery and compared with their velocity structure in various emission lines from echelle spectra taken with the 4m telescope at Kitt Peak. The imagery and spectra were then compared to map the kinematics of the nebula in several emission lines and decode the 3-dimensional morphology and ionization structure of the nebula, including that of C+2 from C III] 1909 Å for the first time.

ABSTRACT RR Lyrae stars have long been popular standard candles, but significant advances in methodology and technology have been made in recent years to increase their precision as distance indicators. We present multiwavelength (optical UBVRcIc and Gaia G, BP, RP; near-infrared JHKs; mid-infrared [3.6], [4.5]) period–luminosity–metallicity (PLZ), period–Wesenheit–metallicity (PWZ) relations, calibrated using photometry obtained from the Carnegie RR Lyrae Program and parallaxes from the Gaia second data release for 55 Galactic field RR Lyrae stars. The metallicity slope, which has long been predicted by theoretical relations, can now be measured in all passbands. The scatter in the PLZ relations is on the order of 0.2 mag, and is still dominated by uncertainties in the parallaxes. As a consistency check of our PLZ relations, we also measure the distance modulus to the globular cluster M4, the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud, and our results are in excellent agreement with estimates from previous studies.

AbstractWe present U, B, V, I (SUSI@NTT) and J,Ks (SOFI@NTT) photometry of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) cluster Reticulum. The observing strategy and data reduction (DAOPHOTII/ALLFRAME) allowed us to reach an accuracy of the order of 0.01 – 0.03 mag in all the bands at limiting magnitudes typical of RR Lyrae stars. Reticulum hosts a sizable sample of RR Lyrae stars (32), and we supply an accurate distance estimate using the RR Lyrae K-band Period-Luminosity-Metallicity (PLZK) relation. This method presents several advantages when compared with the MV vs [Fe/H] relation, since it is only marginally affected by off-ZAHB evolutionary effects and reddening corrections.

AbstractWe present the results of observations of distant galaxies (z ~ 0.8) at high spatial resolution (~0.1"). We observed 7 fields of 1' × 1' with the NACO Adaptive Optics system (VLT) in Ks (2.2μm) band with typical V ~ 14 guide stars and 3h integration time per field. Observed fields are selected within the COSMOS survey area. We analyze the morphologies by means of B/D (Bulge/Disk) decomposition with GIM2D and CAS (Concentration-Asymmetry) estimators for 79 galaxies with magnitudes between Ks = 17 − 23 and classify them in three main morphological types (Late Type, Early Type and Irregulars). We obtain for the first time an estimate of the distribution of galaxy types at redshift z ~ 1 as measured from the near infrared at high spatial resolution.
