Freshwater diatom communities of the Strømness Bay area, South Georgia

Modern diatom samples were collected from 43 sites across the Strømness Bay area of South Georgia. From 115 taxa belonging to 22 six diatom assemblages were distinguished. A CCA-analysis indicated that the assemblages are linked to pH and conductivity ranges, and habitat structure. The Eunotia paludosa var. paludosa - Eunotia subarcuatoides assemblage occurs in small acid water bodies. Samples of the Fragilaria germainii - Pinnularia aff. anglica assemblage are found in pools with a relatively high conductivity. The Fragilaria neoproducta assemblage and the Achnanthes subatomoides - Navicula vitabunda assemblage are mainly found in larger pools and lakes. This relationship between the assemblages and pH was comparable with results found in the testate amoebae fauna of South Georgia.

Forty six taxa of testate amoebae were found in 45 samples of aquatic environments ranging from small pools to lakes. Four assemblages were distinguished which, to some degree, can be related ecologically to different pH ranges, and to differences in the habitat structure. The Nebela collaris assemblage occurs in acid pools mostly vegetated with mosses. The Centropyxis gibba gibbosa–Euglypha tuberculata–Difflugia globularis/globulus assemblage is found in the sediments of circumneutral to slightly alkaline lakes. Both of the other assemblages are mainly found in pools, which are more (for the Trinema assemblage) or less vegetated with mosses, in slightly acid (the Difflugia penardi–Centropyxis aerophila assemblage) or circumneutral to slightly alkaline (the Trinema lineare assemblage) conditions. A generic comparison with the Arctic fauna indicates differences, especially in the role of Difflugia as a dominant genus in aquatic habitats.

We examined diatom assemblages from 18 stream and pond samples in the Franz Josef Land Archipelago (FJL), the most northern land of Eurasia. More than 216 taxa were observed, revealing a rich circumpolar diatom flora, including many undescribed taxa. Widely distributed taxa were the most abundant by cell densities, while circumpolar taxa were the most species rich. Stream and pond habitats hosted different assemblages, and varied along a pH gradient.Diatoma tenuiswas the most abundant and ubiquitous taxon. However, several circumpolar taxa such asChamaepinnularia gandrupii, Cymbella botellus, Psammothidiumsp. andHumidophila laevissimawere also found in relatively high abundances. Aerophilic taxa were an important component of FJL diatom assemblages (Humidophilaspp.,Caloneisspp. andPinnulariaspp.), reflecting the large and extreme seasonal changes in Arctic conditions. We predict a decrease in the abundance of circumpolar taxa, an increase in local (α-) freshwater diatom diversity, but a decrease in regional diversity (circumpolar homogenization) as a result of current warming trends and to a lesser extent the increasing human footprint in the region.

A limited sampling campaign on the main island of Îles Kerguelen revealed 170 freshwater diatom taxa, belonging to 29 genera. Four different communities were distinguished in two major groups, being determined principally by habitat type. The Fragilaria vaucheriae–Fragilaria germainii assemblage occurs exclusively in running waters. The three other communities, observed in standing waterbodies, are separated by their geographical position on the island with the Fragilaria exigua–Aulacoseira alpigena and the Fragilaria exigua–Fragilaria vaucheriae assemblages, mainly found in the Lac Studer area and the Fragilaria pinnata var. pinnata assemblage, recorded near the coastal line and the research station. Analysis of different waterbody types revealed the habitat preference of the various diatom taxa and identified a diatom flora for running waters and one preferring stagnant waterbodies.

Epilithic diatom community structures are compared among three locations of the eastern Adriatic Sea coast (Croatia), in the presence of two different invasive Caulerpa species, C. taxifolia and C. cylindracea, which have spread rapidly in the Mediterranean in the last decades. Forty samples were taken seasonally at three sites (island of Hvar, island of Mljet, and Dubrovnik) between November 2008 and October 2010. Light and electron microscopy examinations were used for qualitative analysis. Altogether 310 epilithic taxa belonging to 65 genera were identified. The highest number of these taxa belonged to Mastogloia (48) and Amphora (32), followed by Diploneis (24), Nitzschia (23), Navicula (22), and Cocconeis (19). A similar seasonal shift in growth form structure was observed for epilithic communities at the three sampling sites, where the number of erect group diatoms doubled (Hvar, Mljet) and tripled (Dubrovnik) in spring. Apart from erect forms, Dubrovnik and Mljet were characterised by adnate forms, while Hvar was characterised by tube-dwelling forms. The highest values of the Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index were recorded in autumn and ranged from 5.26 to 5.34. ANOSIM tests performed on species relative abundance data confirmed that the diatom communities differed significantly between the sampling sites, and that the differences were correlated with the presence of the two species of invasive macroalgae (Hvar – area of C. taxifolia; Mljet and Dubrovnik – areas of C. cylindracea). As revealed by SIMPER analyses, the group of taxa contributing the most to variance between diatom assemblages from sites of different invasive alga included Cocconeis scutellum var. scutellum, Rhopalodia pacifica, Navicula ramosissima, and Berkeleya rutilans. Although the spatial variation in communities may also reflect the effects of unmeasured environmental variables, the results suggest the possible influence of invasive seaweeds of the genus Caulerpa which may affect the habitat by competing with autochthonous algae. This study contributes to the knowledge of diatom diversity both at regional and at broader scales in these challenged environments.

The chrysophycean stomatocyst flora of freshwater samples from the Strømness Bay area, located in the northern part of the Sub-Antarctic Island of South Georgia, was investigated, using scanning electron microscopy. A total of 59 stomatocyst morphotypes were recorded. Thirty-one of them were previously observed and 28 are described as new, following guidelines of the International Statospore Working Group. Since this is only the second study of chrysophyte cysts from South Georgia, this large number of new morphotypes is not surprising. The cyst flora show only a small resemblance to the stomatocyst flora found on mosses of the same area.Key words: chrysophyte stomatocysts, South Georgia, Sub-Antarctica.
