NEW TAXA IN PAPHIA AND DIMORPHANTHERA (ERICACEAE) IN PAPUASIA AND THE PROBLEM OF GENERIC LIMITS IN VACCINIEAE

New species of Ericaceae recently collected in Papua New Guinea necessitate a re-evaluation of the status of Agapetes subgenus Paphia section Paphia. The combination of molecular and morphological data confirms that Agapetes, currently a genus of about 100 species from Fiji, New Caledonia and Queensland to mainland SE Asia, and most diverse in the latter area, cannot be maintained in its current circumscription. Various taxonomic solutions that do justice to our current knowledge of the morphology and relationships of the two main parts of the genus are discussed. The reinstatement of Paphia does least violence nomenclaturally. All 23 taxa recognized in Paphia are listed, 14 new combinations of Agapetes from the New Guinea–SW Pacific area are made in Paphia, three new species are described (P. megaphylla, P. vulcanicola and P. woodsii), and an incompletely known taxon is characterized. A key to all taxa is presented. In Dimorphanthera, five new species are described (D. angiliensis, D. anomala, D. antennifera, D. cratericola and D. inopinata), three reduced to synonymy, one reduced to a variety and one variety recognized as a species (D. continua). A key to the 87 taxa currently recognized in the genus is presented.

Brunettia Annandale (sensu Duckhouse 1966) has previously been known in Australopapua from thirty-three species, comprising twenty-eight from Papua-New Guinea, but only five from Australia, all in the southern states. This anomaly is now removed with the description of seventeen new species from Queensland and the Northern Territory, showing that the major evolutionary centre extends from Papua-New Guinea far into northern Australia, and that the southern species are not in reality separated by a disjunction. Three new species are also described from southern Australia, two from New Guinea, and two from New Caledonia (the first from this island). The phylogenetic importance of Brunettia is especially due to the inclusion in it of taxa that are cladistically basal and annectant, nearly all Australopapuan. The mix of tribal, generic, subgeneric and species characters found in earlier descriptions is ordered into a strict hierarchical sequence, and Brunettia is divided into seven subgenera — Brunettia, s. str., Plesiobrunettia, subg. nov., Atrichobrunettia Satchell, Maurobrunettia, subg. nov., Campanulobrunettia, subg. nov., Horobrunettia, subg. nov., and Mrrousiella Vaillant, stat. nov., this last resurrected from synonymy with Atrichobrunettia. Of these, Maurobrunettia occurs in northern Australia, Plesiobrunettia is New Guinean, Campanulobrunettia and Atrrchobrunettia are Australopapuan, and Horobrunettia is mainly Australopapuan but has one species in the Philippines. Brunettia s. str. is more widely distributed, but extensively diversified in Papua-New Guinea, and Mirousiella is European. The ten Papua-New Guinean species placed by Quate & Quate (1967) in Atrichobrunettia are transferred into the various subgenera of Brunettia (combs. nov.), and their Brunettia species are also assorted into these subgenera. New keys are provided covering all Australopapuan Brunettia species. The genealogical status of Mormiini and Maruinini are discussed. It is concluded that because Mormiini are an offshoot of the Maruinini, the Maruinini are paraphyletic, but that this defect cannot be overcome until more is known of maruinine phylogeny.

Iphimedia is reviewed and a new diagnosis based on 35 known species is given. Three new species, one each from Australia, Papua New Guinea and Florida, are described. This is the only genus, in a family otherwise confined to cold and deep oceans, that has tropical species.

A previously unreported radiation of myrmarachnine jumping spiders from New Guinea is described, which, although having few known species, is remarkably diverse in body forms. This clade is the new subtribe Levieina, represented by seven new species in three new genera. WithinLevieagen. n.are three new species,L.herbertisp. n.,L.lornaesp. n., andL.francesaesp. n., all of which are unusual among the myrmarachnines in appearing as typical salticids, not antlike.Papuamyrgen. n.superficially resemblesLigonipesKarsch, 1878 orRhombonotusL. Koch, 1879 as a compact antlike spider, but lacks their laterally-compressed palp and bears an ectal spur on the paturon of the chelicera. Two species ofPapuamyrgen. n.are described,Papuamyromhifosgasp. n.andP.pandorasp. n.Agorioidesgen. n., containingA.cherubinosp. n.andA.papagenasp. n., is antlike, with the carapace sunken inwards (concave) between the posterior lateral and posterior median eyes. Phylogenetic analysis of data from the 28S, 16SND1, and COI gene regions of 29 species of myrmarachnines shows that the three new genera form a clade that is sister to the subtribe Myrmarachnina (Myrmarachnesensu lato), with the subtribe Ligonipedina less closely related.

Five new species of spiny solanums (Solanum subgenus Leptostemonum Bitter; the Leptostemonum Clade) are described from the islands of the Pacific. Two of the new species are from Fiji (S. pseudopedunculatum D.McClelland, sp. nov. and S. ratale D.McClelland, sp. nov.), two from New Caledonia (S. memoayanum D.McClelland, sp. nov. and S. semisucculentum D.McClelland, sp. nov.), one from Papua New Guinea (S. labyrinthinum D.McClelland, sp. nov.) and another from Vanuatu (S. vanuatuense D.McClelland, sp. nov.). A new status and combination is provided for the rare Hawaiian endemic S. caumii (F.Br.) D.McClelland, comb. et stat. nov. and a new type designated for S. peekelii Bitter of Papua New Guinea, for which a description is also provided. All species are illustrated with digitized herbarium specimens, mapped and have been assigned a preliminary conservation status using current IUCN guidelines.
