The reaction of Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O, imidazole (ImH), and ethylenediamine (en) in a 1 : 2 : 1 ratio afforded in high yield dark-blue single-crystals of [(en)CuII(ImH)2](ClO4)2, 1, which can be used after deprotonation as a building block for heterometallic ferrimagnetic chains. The structural and electronic properties of 1 were examined by X-ray crystallography, FTIR, ESI-MS, electrochemistry, UV/vis/NIR, EPR, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The structure of 1 exhibits intermolecular π-π interactions and hydrogen bonds but the magnetic data exclude the presence of intermolecular exchange interactions.

A new dissymmetrical oxamidate ligand has been used to construct a metal-organic network. Using this ligand, a novel coordination polymer, namely {[Cu(obea)]2Cu・CH3OH・H2O}n (1) [H3obea = N1-(2-carboxyphenyl)-N2-(2-hydroxyethyl)oxalamide] has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The structure of complex 1 consists of neutral trinuclear complex units. Through syn-anti carboxylate bridges, the complex features a 2D structure with a helical substructure. Its magnetic properties have been investigated.

The magnetic properties of a novel cobalt-based hydrogen vanadate, Co13.5(OH)6(H0.5VO3.5)2(VO4)6, are reported. This new magnetic material was synthesized in single-crystal form using a conventional hydrothermal method. Its crystal structure was determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and was also characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Its crystal framework has a dumortierite-like structure consisting of large hexagonal and trigonal channels; the large hexagonal channels contain one-dimensional chains of face-sharing CoO6 octahedra linked to the framework by rings of VO4 tetrahedra, while the trigonal channels are occupied by chains of disordered V2O4 pyramidal groups. The magnetic properties of this material were investigated by DC magnetic measurements, which indicate the occurrence of antiferromagnetic interactions.

The title compounds were synthesized and their crystal structures determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction data. Both compounds crystallize with the cubic space group Im3̄̅. Yb(Zn,Al)∽6: a = 14.299(4) Å , wR(F2) = 0.041, with Yb25.39(2)Zn138.2(3)Al7.7(3) as the refined composition; YbZn∽6: a = 14.298(4) Å , wR(F2) = 0.079, with Yb25.05(3)Zn146.83(9) as the refined composition. Their crystal structures are closely related to the YCd6 type, with two different details: Zn/Al (or Zn) atoms in the 8c sites center the cubic interstices of the structure; the pentagonal dodecahedron cavities are partially filled by ytterbium atoms in the 2a sites, with an environment topologically similar to that found in the clathrate-I compounds. Magnetic properties of the two compounds are also reported.
