This paper reports progress of our effort to rapidly capture, and display in time-lapsed mode, the 3-dimensional dynamic architecture of active living cells and developing embryos at the highest resolution of the light microscope. Our approach entails: (A) real-time video tape recording of through-focal, ultrathin optical sections of live cells at the highest resolution of the light microscope; (B) repeat of A at time-lapsed intervals; (C) once each time-lapsed interval, an image at home focus is recorded onto Optical Disk Memory Recorder (OMDR); (D) periods of interest are selected using the OMDR and video tape records; (E) selected stacks of optical sections are converted into plane projections representing different view angles (±4 degrees for stereo view, additional angles when revolving stereos are desired); (F) analysis using A - D.

: Pregnancy-related complications can have long-term effects on mother and fetus/child. Microbiome within the human gut is an important factor to maintain optimum health during pregnancy and could possibly reduce the incidence of these complications. Probiotics are active living microorganisms that can provide the host with health benefits such as; immune and hormonal regulatory and metabolic benefits when administered in adequate and optimum dose. Probiotic supplementations also regulate abnormal and unbalanced microflora population that can control the pathogenesis of several diseases like obesity and diabetes. Probiotics also play a protective role in complications like preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus and maternal weight gain and enhance successful outcomes of reproduction. This mini review will thereby summarize the maternal and fetal effects of probiotics during pregnancy.

The Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Coalition is a community-based health promotion program begun in 2006 in North Portland's Portsmouth neighborhood. The program seeks to promote community health and prevent childhood obesity by addressing barriers at local, regional and policy levels, with particular attention to the built environment. This article describes the findings of a program evaluation based on interviews with school staff and Latino parents. Important themes include the impact of the closure of a neighborhood school, access to grocery stores with affordable healthy foods, and concern about school meals. The comprehensive approach of programs like HEAL, which uses the socio-ecological model of health promotion, lends itself well to the participation of applied social scientists.
