One of basic characteristics of the regular bipedal walk of humanoid robots is the maintenance of their dynamic balance during the walk, whereby a decisive role is played by the unpowered degrees of freedom arising at the foot–ground contact. Hence, the role of the Zero-Moment Point (ZMP) as an indicator of dynamic balance is indispensable. This paper gives a detailed discussion of some basic theoretical assumptions related to the ZMP in the light of imprecise, and even incorrect, interpretations that have recently appeared, and which have led to some erroneous conclusions. Examples are given to show some erroneous basic attitudes and the genesis of some of them is indicated. It is also pointed out that in the domain of bipedal walk there are still notions that are not clearly defined and their meanings differentiated in some related branches of science and engineering. One of the examples is dynamic balance and stability, which are often used interchangeably.

This article discusses growing role of silicon micro-electron-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology in automotive and consumer products, telecommunications, radio-frequency applications, and medical care. The article also highlights that silicon-based MEMS devices must be constructed in clean rooms, such as one at Sandia's Microelectronics Development laboratory. According to engineers, the search for an in-depth understanding of wear mechanisms in dynamic silicon MEMS is expected to drive an ambitious wave of leading-edge research into microscale science and engineering, distinct from that which prevailed at the mesoscale. It has been found that gas damping between MEMS structures and the substrate, within the sealed package, can cause serious nonlinearities. While this doesn't lead to failure in the classic sense, it may make it harder to close a switch. On the plus side, gas damping can provide a cushion that enables a MEMS device to survive surprisingly high shock loads.

Dynamic systems play a key role in various directions of modern science and engineering, such as the mathematical modeling of physical processes, the broad spectrum of complicated and pressing problems of civil engineering, for example, in the analysis of seismic stability of constructions and buildings, in the fundamental studies of computing and producing systems, of biological and sociological events. A researcher uses a dynamic system as a mathematical apparatus to study some phenomena and conditions, under which any statistical events are not important and may be disregarded. The main task of the theory of dynamic systems is to study curves, which differential equations of this system define. During such a research, firstly we need to split a dynamic system’s phase space into trajectories. Secondly, we investigate a limit behavior of trajectories. This research stage is to reveal equilibrium positions and make their classification. Also, here we find and investigate sinks and sources of the system’s phase flow. As a result, we obtain a full set of phase portraits, possible for a taken family of differential dynamic systems, which describe a behavior of some process. Namely polynomial dynamic systems often play a role of practical mathematical models hence their investigation has significant interest. This paper represents the original study of a broad family of differential dynamic systems having reciprocal polynomial right parts, and describes especially developed research methods, useful for a wide spectrum of applications.

This article explores ideas for linking university research entities with small- and medium-sized manufacturing industries. In an environment such as the Western Cape, South Africa, where well established teaching and research activities in science and engineering exist at several universities and research institutions, it is astonishing to realize that the local manufacturing industry struggles to obtain assistance with research and development in order to remain competitive locally and globally. Some of the reasons for this situation are outlined and solutions are proposed. In particular, the role of a gateway organization which aims to build networks between universities, research institutions and industry is described.

The study of the organizations and manager work is relevant today, while requiring continuous improvement and understanding. However, there are few studies on the organizational structure and the manager work in the public sector. Thus, the purpose of thispaper is to identify the role of the public administrator through administrative processes and management activities, with emphasis on the structure and strategies developed. As a methodology, the case study was adopted at the Universidade Estadual Paulista, Faculty of Science and Engineering of Tupã/SP, where the data were collected from free observation (3 months immersed), interviews and document analysis. Firsts results, there is a need for a formal and effective communication between administrative areas, which have their specific functions and are formalized in the organizational chart. Also, that the planning process is carried out from top to bottom and there is a greater participation of the executive coordination and of teachers than of technical-administrative servants and students, because of the Collegiate System Representation. It is also pointed out that, although strategic planning is formal and results in a formalized tactical and operational plan, the organization executes its activities based on short and medium-term demands, because of emerging actions that do not follow the established plan. Therefore, despite the existence of several unmapped processes, the unit administrators follow a logical and standardized flow of actions to achieve their goal.
