Psychological and spiritual support of the dying patient involves establishing a relationship of trust, which requires special communication skills. Health professionals are not usually trained in these skills and they tend to dissociate themselves from dying patients and their relatives. An analysis of the communication proses enables us to improve our own pattern of communication. Firstly, counselling requires that we direct our attention — by eye contact, our position, listening and conversation. Various techniques may be used to improve conversation, such as the use of open and closed questions and paraphrasing. One must also be aware of the role of non-verbal communication. Secondly, confrontation is a technique used to stimulate exploration of topics which the patient is avoiding. The dying person is still a living human being and we should talk to him about the same things and for the same reasons we would talk to anyone else — because we are interested in him as a person.

This article revisits the nonverbal rhetorical tradition in Confucianism and examines how Confucianism actualized the tradition through its careful consideration of supernatural forces. In Confucianism, genuine persuasion produces actual change and transformation of one’s course of action, not merely verbal conviction. Speech only is not enough to genuinely persuade others. A speaker must transform others by his exemplary acts in the rites and holy ceremonies where supernatural forces and the notion of the afterlife hold a significant place. While Confucius was not interested in discussing the existence of demons and ghosts or their actual function in society, he recognized that their supposed and assumed existence in holy rites would provide society with an opportunity for genuine persuasion, which leads people to actual changes and reforms in their political and moral life. Discussing the nonverbal mode of persuasion in Confucianism may enhance contemporary democracy in two aspects. First, nonverbal persuasion recognizes those who may have difficulty in actively participating in verbal communication, such as the disabled, immigrants, foreigners, and politically and socially marginalized people, in political discourses. Second, the positive role of civic religion in contemporary societies may be discovered.

The mission of Da'wah in Islamic educational institutions such as the Al-Qur'an Education Park demands the supply of learners to have adequate verbal communication skills. Verbal stimulation is necessary to provide an understanding of the importance of reactualization of speech ability in order to ensure the success of Da'wah. In the context of the Qur'an Education Park requires assistance in obtaining an integral stakeholder empowerment vehicle. Through the approach of assets and resources mentoring speech exercises as a verbal stimulation in the education Park Al-Qur'an at-Taqwa Sumberejo Lengkong Nganjuk produces the ability to empower assets and potential managers and key figures. Performance can be fulfilled because it is supported by the effectiveness of social sales, planning with partner devotion, implementation of programs involving assets and potential and role of key figures in the control function.

Abstract. The present study aimed at evaluating if the three-item sense of coherence (SOC) scale developed by Lundberg and Nystrom Peck (1995) can be effectively used for research purpose in both nonclinical and clinical samples. To provide evidence that it represents adequately the measured construct we tested its validity in a nonclinical (N = 658) and clinical sample (N = 764 patients with cancer). Results obtained in the nonclinical sample attested a positive relation of SOC – as measured by the three-item SOC scale – with Antonovsky’s 13-item and 29-item SOC scales (convergent validity), and with dispositional optimism, sense of mastery, anxiety, and depression symptoms (concurrent validity). Results obtained in the clinical sample confirmed the criterion validity of the scale attesting the positive role of SOC – as measured by the three-item SOC scale – on the person’s capacity to respond to illness and treatment. The current study provides evidence that the three-item SOC scale is a valid, low-loading, and time-saving instrument for research purposes on large sample.
