An expanded isoindigo unit (IBTI) has been incorporated into a donor–acceptor conjugated polymer for the first time. The PCE of the solar cell device based on the new polymer reached 6.41% with a fill factor of 0.71.

Using a fluoropyrido[3,4-b]pyrazine based 2D-conjugated polymer as an electron donor in polymer solar cells, a power conversion efficiency of 6.2% is obtained, which is the highest PCE among the PP-based polymers reported to date.

We show significantly reduced bimolecular recombination in a novel silole-based copolymer (KP115):fullerene blend, which allows the fabrication of polymer solar cells with relatively thick active layers. This leads to improved device efficiencies and makes roll-to-roll printing much easier. The origin of the reduced recombination, however, is not known. Our recent data suggest that published models are inadequate to explain this phenomenon.
